The Mitsubishi Magna was an Australian-made family car. It was produced between 1985 and 2005 in various sedan and wagon models and can still be seen on Australia’s roads today.

The Mitsubishi Magna was a medium-sized car sold between 1985 and 2005, and was originally based on the fifth generation Mitsubishi Galant. It was built in Australia for the Australian market and its popularity helped Mitsubishi to loosen Ford and Holden’s grip on Australia’s car-buying public. The original Magna was designed to provide the size and power of a six-cylinder vehicle while preserving fuel economy and comfort. The Magna name was chosen in order to advertise its larger size compared to other four-cylinder family cars.

Generations

Mitsubishi produced three generations of the Magna. The first generation of Magnas comprised the TM, TN and TP models produced between 1985 and 1991, all of which featured 2.6 litre engines and either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual gearbox. The TP series also added the first of the Mitsubishi Magna Grand Tourer wagons. The second generation began in 1991 with a new wider body based on the Mitsubishi Sigma sold in other markets. It also saw the launch of the Mitsubishi Verada, a premium version of the Magna equipped with a six-cylinder engine. The third and final generation launched in 1996 with a new pillarless design. All 2003 Mitsubishi Magnas and 2004 Mitsubishi Magnas fall under the third generation umbrella. From 2002, this generation included an all-wheel drive series, making Mitsubishi the first car manufacturer in Australia to build an AWD family car.

Models

Once all three generations are taken into account, the Mitsubishi Magna family is a very diverse group of cars. In addition to the four-cylinder family cars that began the Magna line, it also contains three generations of wagon models including the second-generation Executive Wagons and later LS and VR wagons. The Magna line also included more sports-focused models such as the third generation Magna Ralliart, which took design cues from Mitsubishi’s successful rally teams.
