If you think you've been targeted by a gift card scam, you'll find information on what to do in our article on protecting yourself against gift card scams
eBay gift cards can be used to pay for almost any item on our site. You can use your gift card to pay for all or part of your next purchase.
Buying an eBay gift card
Digital gift cards are currently unavailable on eBay as we develop a better-than-ever experience to be launched soon. However, physical gift cards are still available from most supermarkets (including Coles and Woolworths) and many other local retailers such as convenience stores and petrol stations.
Paying with an eBay gift card
You'll need to use your redemption code to pay for an item with your gift card. Here's where you'll find your gift card redemption code:
- Physical cards – Scratch off the security coating on the back of the card to reveal the code
- Digital cards – The code is in the email you received
When you're ready to make a purchase, here's how to pay with your eBay gift card at checkout:
- Enter your postage and payment details.
- Scroll to the bottom of the checkout page and enter the gift card redemption code in the Gift cards, vouchers, coupons field.
- Select Apply to see your new total.
- Check your details again and select Confirm and pay.
If you don't have enough money on your gift card to cover the total cost of an item outright, you can pay the remaining cost using another payment method, such as a credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Afterpay, Zip or PayPal. You'll see available payment methods in the listing and at checkout.
Check your eBay gift card balance
It's always a good idea to check your gift card balance before you go to checkout. To view your card's balance, go to our gift card balance checker - opens in new window or tab or select the button below and enter your 13-digit gift card redemption code.

If there's a remaining balance on your gift card after you've used it, the balance will remain on the card and can be used the next time you buy an item on eBay.
Tip
If you return an item you bought with an eBay gift card, the amount you used on the gift card will be refunded – this may take up to 35 days. You can then use the gift card redemption code again as long as you're using the same eBay account.
Things to remember before using a gift card
Here are a few tips for using eBay gift cards:
- If the gift card doesn't cover the total amount of your purchase, you can pay the remainder using another payment method
- You don't need to spend the entire gift card amount in one purchase. We'll save any remaining balance against your eBay account for you to spend at another time
- If you used your gift card before, you'll need to sign in with the same account as your previous purchase
- You can spend more than one gift card at a time, or use a gift card on top of a voucher or discount offer. At checkout, put in one code at a time in the Gift cards, vouchers, coupons section and select Apply after each one to update your order total. You can use up to 8 codes per transaction
- Only redeem eBay gift cards when paying for an item at eBay checkout. Never give your redemption code to anyone else. Learn more about protecting yourself against gift card scams
There are a few restrictions to keep in mind:
- To spend your gift card, you'll need to have an eBay account registered in Australia, with an Australian delivery address for your order
- Gift cards can only be used for purchases on eBay.com.au, and can't be used for certain items
- Gift cards expire 3 years after the date of issue
- You can't redeem a gift card if you're using PayPal's Pay After Delivery option – you'll need to change your PayPal payment method
