Es gibt kaum etwas, was so schwer zu erschuttern ist wie alltagspsycholo- gische UEberzeugungen daruber, was Manner sind, was sie antreibt und was sie denken. Offensichtlich existiert ein tief verwurzeltes Bedurfnis, Manner und Frauen als Gattungswesen klar voreinander unterscheiden zu koennen und ihnen von Natur aus gegensatzliche Eigenschaften und Merkmale zuzuschreiben. Dieser tief verwurzelten Neigung, Geschlechtsunterschiede auf eine wie auch immer geartete Natur zuruckzufuhren, ist zu verdanken, dass biologische Argumentationen selbst dann, wenn es sich um reine Speku- lationen handelt, von Massenmedien begierig aufgegriffen und zu ver- kaufstrachtigen Schlagzeilen aufgerustet werden, wahrend die sozialwis- senschaftliche Geschlechterforschung der letzten Jahrzehnte eher wie ein Stoerfaktor in der oeffentlichen Meinung und in unserem Weltbild wirkt. Tatsachlich bestehen aber seit den funfziger Jahren gesicherte Er- kenntnisse daruber, dass die biologische Festlegung von Verhaltens- und Erlebensunterschieden zwischen Mannern und Frauen systematisch uber- schatzt wird. Dabei ist nicht in Abrede gestellt, dass die Anatomie der Koerper und beispielsweise hormonelle Prozesse das Empfinden und Han- deln der Individuen beeinflussen. Vieles spricht aber dagegen, dass es Sinn macht, von einer vorsozialen und quasi rein biologischen Koerper- lichkeit auszugehen. Je vorurteilsfreier und genauer wir Manner und Frauen in unterschiedlichen Kulturen und sozialen Milieus betrachten, desto deutlicher wird, dass wir es bei allen Fragen des Geschlechts mit komplexen sozialen Prozessen und Zusammenhangen zu tun haben, die gesellschaftliche Vorstellungen genauso beeinflussen wie das Denken, Handeln und Fuhlen der Individuen.
