Product Information

In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

    A Monumental Picture in Movie History

    None of the American made war movies ever made before 1985 can hold a candle in quality to this epic. The tension, claustrophobia and psychological drama of these sea wolves unfolds with stark realism in sharp focus. These are not the idealised characters of most navy going movies with all sailors well scrubbed, shaved, manicured, smelling good and looking like they just left home. On the contrary, the men in Das Boot's German U-boat wear the war on their faces, salt in their beards, oscillating between the adrenaline rush of the hunt for ships they torpedo, to sinking to the bottom of the ocean, with depth charges exploding all around them and the enemy on the surface waiting to kill them.     Amazed To See , Director's Cut for a timeless classic!

    I was amazed to see a director's cut had been prepared for this timeless film from Wolfgang Peterson. Over the years he has been known for good films, some international and some not. This film gets at the confinement suffered by a crew on a submarine, but also how things quickly turn about which frequently happens in war.

    The Best War Book of them All.

    I had watched two versions of the movie Das Boot and enjoyed them very much. BUT I was totally unprepared for the book. It is 500+ pages of captivating detail of submarine life and war drama. When I was done with the book, I offered it to my wife to read. She reads a great deal, but has no special interest in mechanical detail or war, but she was captivated by Das Boot. What better recommendation could I offer, for either the DVD or book ?

    Great movie! Great story!

    This movie tells a very accurate and compelling story of how the German troops, particularly the U-boats and their crews, became increasingly discontented with their leadership, their unbearable living conditions on board, and how they faced ever increasing odds of not returning home toward the end of WW ll. Excellent movie. Very accurate. One of my favorite movies.
