      • Haunting visualisation of the tragedy of war

        I have followed Dr. Ballard since his famed search for Titanic, and always find his research thorough, and his telling of history through its visible remains compelling. This is a repeat purchase for me, as I first owned this book over twenty years ago, but it lost none of its power in the rereading. Unlike many wreck divers, who are merely trophy hunters, Ballard shows empathy with the vessels he explores. He is there merely to add weight to the history, and fact to the tale. He shows with each photograph the wounds inflicted by war and water on once majestic vessels, and in that, he shows how these wounds were also inflicted upon the human casualties of the conflict. One cannot help but place oneself amidst the shattered hulks, imagining the ghastly horror of the attack. Superb ...
