About this product

Product Information

A saturnine vision of the universe and an interest in the female form bordering on adoration have been two constants of Dennis Hopper's directorial work. Both are on display in this neo-noir, starring Don Johnson as cagey drifter Harry Madox, who picks up a job from used car lot owner George Harshaw (Jerry Hardin), soon after arriving in a small Texas town. Attracting women is not one of Harry's problems, and he's soon involved with Harshaw's innocent young bookkeeper, Gloria Harper (Jennifer Connelly), and his tough, sexy wife, Dolly (Virginia Madsen). An ambitious sort, Harry is also planning to rob the local bank. But things begin to get strange when he learns that Gloria is being extorted by nasty backwoodsman Frank Sutton (William Sadler), who also seems to be linked to Dolly. While not quite camp, the film is a triumph of style over substance, as the characters obey the highly improbable laws of the noir universe as religiously as any Kabuki performer does theirs. Working with longtime cinematographer Ueli Steiger, Hopper again reveals a fastidious eye, and the lavish photography of the women evokes an era when they were Hollywood's cynosure.

    A little known classic.

    The Hot Spot plays out like a classic, mystery, romance novel. In the best sort of way. There is mystery, murder, blackmail, sex, crime, betrayal, and vengeance. Don Johnson and Virginia Madden are amazing. Both using their talents and looks to draw you in to their characters. Then, 18 year old Jennifer Connolly is a soft spoken, innocent, gorgeous love interest. She is seemingly to perfect to touch but knows what she wants. This movies is very difficult to find on streaming services. Buy the DVD and share it with friends. They will thank you for it.

    A great movie. Lives up to the title.

    This is currently my favorite Don Johnson movie. It's very good. I've actually read the book it was based on. Dennis Hopper added a lot more spice to the movie. It appears Don Johnson bulked up to play this part, but if you read the description of Harry in the book you can understand why. When Sutton tells Harry "You're a tough guy" and Harry replies, "No you're tough, I'm worse", he means it. There is a lot of fuss about Jennifer Connelly in this, but she is a little to sweet. That's probably to contrast with Virginia Madsen's character, Dolly, who is something else. Love the soundtrack music also, which strangely enough is still available on iTunes.
