    Director Stephen Hopkins' (LOST IN SPACE) crime thriller is a remake of the 1981 French film GARDE Ŕ VUE, and is adapted from John William Wainwright's novel BRAINWASH. On the evening of the San Sebastian festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, wealthy tax attorney Henry Hearst (Gene Hackman) is supposed to attend a charity ball with his lovely, much younger wife Chantal (Monica Belluci), but is called to police headquarters. The previous day, during his morning run, Hearst discovered the dead body of a 12-year-old girl. Captain Victor Benezet (Morgan Freeman) and the explosive young Detective Owens (Thomas Jane) say they merely want to clarify some details in Hearst's statement. However, when the questioning begins and Hearst stumbles over his answers, it is evident that the police suspect Hearst is involved. As the interrogation wears on, particulars of the prominent lawyer's personal life, and his complex relationship with his young wife are revealed. On the quest to discover Hearst's innocence or guilt, the film features tense duels between Hearst and Benezet, and an inventive retracing of events leading up to the murder while set against the lovely, exotic backdrop of San Juan.

        A Fine Example of Gene Hackman's Talent

        This film is very intriguing. The viewer is torn between the possibilities of who the villain is. I remember this movie and always wanted to add it to my collection. With the passing of Gene Hackman, this purchase was long overdue. He and Morgan Freeman play off each other in grand fashion. I sincerely appreciate the Seller for offering this DVD at a great price. The world lost one of the finest actors of our time. I am sorry that his latter years were plagued by dementia and heart disease. Most of all, I am saddened by the state that he and his wife were found in. Truly heartbreaking. May they both Rest In Peace. His many films will keep his memory alive for decades to come.

        Just okay

        I ordered this because I especially liked the actors -- Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman -- and love mystery-thrillers. However did not care for the plot at all, and ending was particularly cynical, I though. Acting was, as always, very good but disappointing plot,

        Be brave and be rewarded with the outstanding acting.

        Don't worry, I'm not about to write a spoiler review. "Under Suspicion" is an American remake of the 1981 French thriller titled "Garde à vue." Both movies deal with the investigation of a prominent citizen who is a suspect in a child murder case, and the police investigator is a friend of the suspect. There are some disturbing images here but no action scenes to horrify viewers. Understand however, this is a film for mature viewers, and one so superbly acted, so filled with powerful nuances addressing the complexities and frailties of human relations, I can't help but wonder why this film didn't receive the major recognition or awards it deserved. Perhaps it was too real, disturbing, or deep, but this highly under-rated film is definitely worth watching if for no other reason than some ...
