About this product

Product Information

With this Nikon D D70 DSLR camera, you can take great pictures at a high level of professional quality. The CCD image sensor of this digital camera captures images with an effective resolution of 6.1 MP. This level of image quality produces high-definition images measuring 3008 by 2000 pixels that allow print copies of up to 11 inches by 14 inches. Capture photos as JPEGs for action shots to save space, or use RAW to preserve all the details for intense photo editing with the Nikon D70. This Nikon D70 body-only DSLR allows you to choose each lens separately to meet your individual photography needs. You may want a versatile, general purpose lens or you may prefer to specialize. Nikon recommends Nikkor CPU type G or D AF, AF-S, and AF-I lenses because they are fully compatible with the D70. The digital SLR viewfinder allows you to view your photo directly through the lens. You see 95% of the image that the D70 will capture through the viewfinder. You can also use the rear-mounted LCD screen to determine your next shot. To help you capture your shot, the Type B BriteView Clear Matte Mark II screen displays brackets around the autofocus area. You can also display digital grid lines to help compose your image. The shutter speed ranges from 1/8000 of a second to 30 seconds, and an electronically controlled self-timer can be set for times from two to 20 seconds. The Nikon D70's top continuous shooting speed is 3 frames per second. You can set metering to 3D Color Matrix for overall scenes, center-weighted for mid-range telephoto shots, or spot for more distant telephoto photography. You can set the exposure manually and bracket it over two to three frames in 1/3 or 1/2 EV steps. You can also compensate for exposure settings in EV steps of 1/3, 1/2, or one full step. Automatic exposure settings give priority to either the shutter or to the aperture, or you can choose settings based on the selected scene mode. Night Landscape and Night Portrait modes assist with low-light conditions outdoors while the Sports settings are designed to capture high-speed action. Other choices include Close-up, Portrait, and Landscape. You can choose up to five focus areas, and dynamic autofocus assigns the setting priority to the closest subject. You can also lock the focus on a single point. Advanced photographers can set the white balance settings manually with a photographer's white card. They can also bracket their settings on these cameras, but automatic presets are available. Settings for the Nikon D70 are equivalent to ISO 35 mm film speeds of 200 to 1600 and this Nikon offers a dynamic range of 12 bits. Noise reduction is also available for high ISO settings and long exposures. The Nikon D70 has a built-in flash that offers front and rear curtain, repeating flash, red-eye reduction, slow sync, and red-eye reduction with slow sync. These digital cameras support Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS) for excellent lighting results. The D70 stores images on either a CompactFlash (CF) I/II or MicroDrive memory card. It is powered by an EN-EL Li-ion rechargeable battery pack. An EH-5 AC adapter and an MH-18a Quick Charger are also included. The camera has a built-in 1/4-inch tripod mount. The camera body measures 5.5 inches by 4.4 inches by 3.1 inches and weighs 21 ounces.

Not a low light contender but still takes a good photo in good light. It will get the job done for very Little money. Just keep your iso 400 or under.

I like it, the image quality is better than any bridge camera i have used. But not great by todays standards. Keep your iso down and you could use it as a profesdional camera.

    Non Working Camera

Well, if it worked other than in flash mode would have been great. The battery worked after I spent my money on a working battery charger. The camera came with a non working one, The camera does not work without the flash. The F stop has to be turned all the way to the right in order to activate the flash mode. So, without me having to ask for it, what are we going to do about this?

  • Great value

I purchased this for a specific purpose. To attach to my telescope, for USB tether to my mac laptop, to live view the telescope on my laptop, and do basic astrophotography. This unit does USB tether to take pictures. However, it does not do a live view. That is why I dinged in one star. Given the age of the product, it still takes great pictures. And for $50, I got a great deal.

  • Greta starter DSLR camera

An oldie but goodie. This is a great alternative to spending hundreds on a new DSLR for a beginner. Also I'm having tons of fun with it as an experienced photographer. I would suggest getting a Compact Flash to SD card converter so you have more flexibility in choices of memory cards, If you are daring you might even try a wifi SD card in there - this means you can transfer photos to you phone directly. Can be a bit fiddly but so if removing the CF card! The camera is pretty easy to operate and does not have the millions of config settings newer cameras have so it's ideal for someone who is new to DSLRs. Many of these cameras are "sticky" to the touch. You can clean this off with makeup wipes and also Isopropyl Alcohol (from drug stores). Final suggestions... 1. Spend a decent amount of money on a lens - the lenses can be used on newer cameras if you get the correct ones. 2. Try to get into the A,S and M setting on the camera to develop your skills

  • DSLR that will sync up to 1/500 sec. Solid build - compatible with every Nikon Lens since '78

One of very few DSLRs that will sync up to 1/500 sec for fill flash outdoors. Compatible with Nikon lenses since the AI series ( 1978 - onwards ) - yes in MANUAL MODE !! - but I use manual mode almost exclusively. Instead of futzing around trying to dial in exposure compensation etc, quicker to turn aperture ring. Other factors like the quality of bokeh depends on lens you pick and if you shoot wide open, no need to stop down aperture ring. Its just a joy to just shoot - once set up the way you shoot. Metering system is very accurate and focusing is too. Focus zones are not bothersome and does not block your view of the shot unlike other annoying multipoint systems that obstruct your view. Shutter lag is low and crisp allowing me to pan for action shots. Viewfinder and display panel is small but accurate in color and saturation. Doesn't bother me as I only use them for evaluative test shots for setting up, then its just the viewfinder for focusing. Turn on camera and fire first shot off in less than 0.3 sec. LOVE this!

  • Nikon D70 DSLR camera

I borrowed a Nikon D70 on a recent 2 week trip to Greece. Absolutely breathtaking visuals. It is NOT the easiest camera to manage the first time you use it, but it does grow on you. It's size and bells and whistles can be intimidating even to a savvy amateur like me. Well, I liked the D70 I borrowed so much, I bought one myself. I recommend the better value to be had with a used D70 is to find someone who is bundling it with one or more lenses, batteries, chargers, accessories. Pluses: outstanding pictures, many options for flash, auto, manual , ISO, f/stop, shutter speed.....more settings than u can ever use, and probably a few u may never WANT to use. Very well designed and well built camera body. Ergonomics of the grip and overall layout of the buttons are well designed. very durable camera. The battery life on this thing is stellar!!! Unbelievably, i got approximate 800 pictures from ONE battery charge. This battery is very robust. I still had a backup battery, because Greece trip I took over 1200 pictures !!! Charge is fairly quick to recharge the battery. Uses compact flash, which I would recommend if you can afford it, take advantage of better compact flash technology for SPEED , maybe 120 mb per second or faster. I got 16 GB capacity, and another 16 GB as a backup. The faster the throughput in mb per second, the faster your camera can store or access pictures, for a few bucks more, it is a worth while investment. I would recommend NOT buying a D70 with more than 10,000 shutter activation's if possible, unless professionally maintained Minuses: size and bulk. too many bells and whistles and buttons that will have novices shying away from the D70. Read a few blogs stating firmware issues and bug fixes yet , not sure if this is still true. No LCD screen cover that comes standard, sure you can buy them optionally. Screen is hard to read in intense sunlight and glare, so I recommend a popup hood over the display to block out glare. Honestly no much to complain about, this camera is great for a novice (who can overcome the intimidating many buttons and bells and whistles) to a pro photographer. Sure it does not have the Vibration Reduction, and other goodies new Nikon's have, but I have a great well made camera, that can use MANY brand and type lenses.

  • Great camera for IR conversion

I bought this camera to convert it to full-spectrum for infrared photography. The camera was very easy to take apart and modify and it works great. Rather than placing an IR/longpass filter on the sensor, I just use one on the lens as a filter. Attached are several sample images I took soon after the conversion (snapped in Wichita, KS). Even though it's only 6MP, the image quality is good enough for me...

  • Excellent image quality on the cheap!

I use Ken Rockwell's excellent guide in setting up the D70. Though only 6MP sensor, gives excellent results in good lighting. The sensor is rumored to be identical to the Epson R-D1, a sought-after rangefinder classic. Prices for the camera body range from $45-$75 making the D70 a real bargain!

  • Good replacement

Good value for my needs. Low mp, but serves my purpose. Compatible with my other D70 which developed a problem of on/off switch remaining "on" at all times requiring removal of battery to turn off. Repair Price to just open the back and look inside was a $200+. A lot cheaper to just purchase this camera. Already familiar with operation and compatible with my extra lens. Camera was in very good/clean condition and works well. Started taking photos the day it came in.

  • A fully functioning Nikon D70 with 28-80 mm Tamaron lens for $50 Unbreakable!

It’s a superb buy for me. At just $50 getting a well cared for Nikon D70 is unbelievable. I am 66yrs, still prefer a DSLR to a cell phone for taking pictures. Though cell’s now have “portrait” as well as “zoom” to rival a DSLR.
