Very good sound and design
I'm very happy with the Hyperboom. I wanted more sound than an ultra portable speaker, but still possible to move around the house or take on location. There are some much bigger bluetooth speakers with better sound but they need two people or a trolley to move around. The Hyperboom can sit inconspicuously in a corner in a room or be moved outside in an instant.
The default sound is perfect for low volume extended listening. On default settings, some people might be disappointed with the speaker, but using the Hyperboom app equaliser to boost bass and treble and, importantly, the Android "Adapt sound-over 60 years old-boost all frequencies" setting, adds a lot more volume and punch to the speaker output. The Hyperboom then lives up to its promise of maximum volume that many will be hoping for. It is really a big sound then, too loud to stand close to at max volume, but what's most impressive, is that sound quality is still great... no obvious distortion or reduction in bass or treble.
Some other brand speakers in the same same price and size category, come "pre-tuned" in default mode with a punchier sound and louder bass... but they distort when turned right up. The Hyperboom, when set up as described, becomes even louder and without any distortion or loss in sound quality. So the Hyperboom can be listened to for extended periods at low or high volumes without ear fatigue. The Hyperboom default settings are very accurate to the original recording and perfect for extended low volume background music. But after appropriate setting up in the app and Android, the Hyperboom is a party beast.
The speaker has a very wide sound dispersion... not as 360° like some others, but more like 270°, and due to the 90° angled left and right speaker faces, the sound has a stereo quality that other speakers don't. Put the Hyperboom into a corner, and the two woofer speaker faces fit into a 90° corner and reflect more bass... a perfect design for indoors.
The software works well and the speaker feels solid and well built.
The extra optical and 3.5mm stereo jack inputs could be useful to some people as well. USB C charging from a PD power brick would have been nice, and the supplied AC power brick, like for a laptop, is a bit old school.
The lack of smart voice assistant and WIFI connectivity might not suit some... to add this to a possible future Hyperboom 2 would make it much more versatile.
The Hyperboom is drip proof but cannot be submersed.
I have ordered another Hyperboom... hopefully the promised stereo mode with speakers in two different lounges will transform the sound even more.
For the size and price, and with appropriate setting up in the app and Android, the combination of sound quality and volume, plus enough portability, is just what I was hoping for.
Highly recommended.
