    Plan B kit lens

This is a full frame lens so can be used on FX or film cameras as well as crop sensor (DX) cam eras. Constriction is plastic (except for the drive) including the F-mount flange. This means it is not likely to fair well on a drop. It is, however, very light weight and images do seem to be sharp even when zoomed to 300 mm. If you use it on a Nikon DX camera the camera will crop the image to appear like that of a longer focal length by a factor of 1.5. While optically it is still a 70-300 mm lens the images will appear like a 105-450 mm on a DX camera. It is not exceptionally fast so figure on daylight use. No focus motor is built into the lens so your camera must have the internal focus motor (not available on many smaller body Nikon DX cameras). This lens was often included as the second lens in many older Nikon camera kits.

  • Top critical review

    Not as good as Sigma

When Nikon, the presumed world leader makes a lens that won't even work on their own D3300 with auto focus, one has to wonder if they are trying to turn their brand into junk. I will buy a new camera body that it will hopefully work on, but until then, I put it in a scrap heap camera bag I will never use. I bought it because I trusted the brand. I won't ever make that mistake again.

  • Properly priced

I bought this lens for my home inspection business, and it's perfect for that function. Houses don't move (much), so manual focus is no problem. Low light is seldom an issue, so maximum aperture of 5.6 is OK. It starts going soft at f-stops above f 11 or below f 8, so not a great lens in that regard. It's nice and compact (one reason I chose it), so I can carry it and my camera body, attached, in a small bag. Low light and moving subjects, no. Static subjects in daylight for medium-resolution applications, yes.

  • Inexpensive lens for Nikon

Supposed to be auto focus, but only on some models of Nikon cameras. Auto focus does not work on my D3200. Other than that, it is a really handy lens. Small and light for a 300 mm zoom lens.

  • Good value for a low end Nikon lens.

This lens may be just fine for many buyers. It's compact compared to the much more expensive VR version of the same focal length made by Nikon. I have mixed feelings. I haven't given it a complete test yet but my attempts at a moon shot were less than satisfying. Then again a good shot of the moon is very difficult to achieve.

  • Great lens for the price

Although this lens is not auto focus with my D3300, it is not a big problem to manually focus. With a high ISO of 800 or better, I can use my camera hand held in most daylight conditions. When taking night sky photographs, it is always advisable to use a tripod. This lens can deliver rich color, sharp focused, varying depth of field images that are impressive. The trick is to learn what it can or can't do and what it does best. I am really glad I got this lens. I like to focus on subjects within a scene with blurred foreground an background. I would have to turn off auto focus to get the kind of 'live' feeling images I do with this lens. I use it 75% of the time I am outdoors.

  • Excellent value for an excellent product

This is a very good item. There are 2 dials on this lens, one at the very end and one near the middle of the lens. Both of these dials control the zoom and focus of the lens. When I first bought it, I thought it would be an auto focus lens. I was surprised to find out the opposite, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love this lens. At a range of 70 mm - 300 mm, there are a lot of uses for this. This lens is great for landscapes and wildlife. The velocity of the focus is entirely dependent on the user. Catching an eagle in flight at last second is a tough challenge, however taking a picture of a stationary target prior to it's movement is fantastic. I am overall VERY happy with my purchase.

  • Good lens, but no auto-focus w/ D3300

Good lens, good pictures, but ended up returning as no auto focus with the Nikon D3300. My mistake. Would of kept, but daughter needed the auto as she take pictures at horse shows and wanted the auto. But if you do not require the auto, I would recommend the lens.

  • Great lens for beautiful shots but not so tough.

The picture quality is typical Nikon, beautiful pictures. But... you've got to be careful with them. My original lens rolled off of a low bed, about 18" drop onto thick carpet. It landed on the lens cap. The zoom ring no longer worked. I could manually move the lens in and out but the ring did nothing. After a bunch of research I figured it was cheaper to just replace it than spend the incredible cost to have Nikon fix it. That's a sad way to do business for them. I see why the other camera manufactures are doing so well.

  • Good quality at a great price!

I have not had a lot of use on this lens yet but it performs as I anticipated. It is Nikon quality and came at a great price. I am looking forward to using it in the future. The 300 millimeter setting really get you out there.
