Robert Mulligan's classic adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, set in the racially charged atmosphere of Macon County, Alabama in the 1930s, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a poignant coming-of-age story. Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Screenplay (written by Horton Foote), and Best Actor (Gregory Peck), TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a timeless film packed with beautiful scenes and meaningful life lessons. The story is told from the vantage point of a young girl nicknamed Scout (Mary Badham) whose widowed white father Atticus Finch (Peck), an attorney, decides on principle to defend a black man (Brock Peters) charged with raping a poor white woman. But the bigoted townspeople would rather lynch the accused than try him, and they make life hellish for the lawyer, his daughter, and his son Jem (Philip Alford). While their father is in the throes of the trial, his bright, inquisitive children learn a hard and unforgettable lesson in justice, morality, and prejudice, part of which requires overcoming an unfounded fear of their mysterious neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall).

    Great Movie

    Read the book then watched the movie. The movie was very close to the book, just some minor changes but nothing that effected the story line. This could have easily been a true story. This is an excellent movie but I do recommend reading the book first. Gregory Peck at his finest. Be sure and watch the "extras" that are included in the DVD set.

    Good but not great

    So as far as the movie goes I think they need a more modern version however I knew this wasn’t a modern movie when I bought it so I can’t complain about this movie the only other negative I could say is it is nowhere as good as the book but movies never are so again knowing this before I bought it I still can’t complain I really did enjoy watching it with my family though because my children ( ages 8,10,11) are not old enough to comprehend the book and this story teaches some really good morals and unlike most of today’s films this is very family friendly only place that I could see that would offend any is that the n**g*r word is used however in my opinion even though I don’t use this word and teach my children not to I think because of the point the story is trying to make it is somewhat needed in it The moral of you haven’t read the book or watched the movie is that you should never judge someone just because they are different than you and to always do what is right despite opposition or popularity

    To Kill a Mockingbird. The children are not supposed to use their B-B guns (not shown in the movie) to kill good things.

    It's an old movie that is a bit over done with its caricatures but is pretty faithful to Harper Lee's book. Old racist Mr. Buell is a bit too bad and Mr. Robinson and Atticus Finch are a bit too good. The depression era kids with their outlooks were most interesting.

    Best movie to teach about racism

    This movie is one if my favorites. I am very disappointed that schools have banned the book and movie from schools. It very clearly and concisely teach how and why racism is bad. Highly recommend. Especially if you're trying to teach children around the age of 10 or older about racism.
