Anno Domini: the seventh year of Augustus Caesar's reign. In the Roman province of Judea, Jews return to the city of their birth for the census. A bright star in the night over Bethlehem marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Years later, Roman commander Messala (Stephen Boyd), who was brought up in Judea, takes command of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem. His Jewish boyhood friend Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) greets him. Messala is delighted. But when Judah refuses to name Jewish patriots, Messala sentences him to the slave galleys and imprisons his mother, Miriam (Martha Scott), and sister, Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell). Judah vows revenge.In BEN-HUR, William Wyler's much-lauded epic, the story of Judah's search for his mother and sister and his quest for revenge intersects with crucial biblical events such as the Sermon on the Mount and the crucifixion. Wyler gets fine performances from Heston, Boyd, Jack Hawkins (as a Roman admiral who befriends Judah), and Hugh Griffith (as an Arab sheik who dreams of racing his beautiful white horses against Messala). Ben Hur, Better Now Than Ever
I thought is was "good" when I first saw it, 50 years ago—but now that I am 70, I can appreciate the story and the way it was presented much more. After living this long, I believe that I can relate more fully to the themes of personal privilege, then loss and devastation, challenge and triumph, and renewal of faith, in a way that I was not able to when I was a teenager. The personal conviction and commitment of the producers and the director, the actors, the film-score composer and everyone else who was involved enabled these themes to become real and to engage viewers in a life-changing way. Ben-Hur is a classic.
Charlton Heston can't be beat for playing biblical and period specific characters such as Ben-Hur, Moses and so on. He brings life to the parts he plays in all his movies. As he said when he was still alive about the biblical movie sets: " those movies can't be replicated because just to build the sets, they are too expensive." Good title
I'm so happy because I saw this movie when it was new. I loved it and I want the record so I did it was in large box included the record and the book showing different pictures and talked about making of the movie. I lost it along time ago.
