Title: My Beautiful Laundrette (Criterion Collection). Stephen Frears (The Hit) was at the forefront of the British cinematic revival of the mid-1980s, and the delightfully transgressive My Beautiful Laundrette is his greatest triumph of the period.
Daniel Day Lewis' first major role. He plays Johnny, a bad boy turned good. His friend Omar runs a laundrette that needs fixing. They work on it together and soon are being asked to renovate other laundrettes. Johnny and Omar fall in love in Thatcher's Britain amid racism, economic hardship and family issues. The Pakistani community are seen as being as corrupt and crooked as the rest of society. People are used and dispensed with. A great look at the 1980's in England. Whilst the film wasn't successful initially, it has since found a cult audience. Fans of DDL will appreciate his accent and persona. The audience can't take their eyes off him. He appeared in A Room with a View around the same time. Audiences couldn't believe it was the same actor in both films. Check this out as you will never see DDL on screen after 2018 as he is retiring from acting. A tragedy.
