About this product

Product Information

The Pentium Pro processor family is ideal for high-end desktops, workstations, and servers. Intel Pentium Pro's 200 MHz processor delivers more performance than previous generation processors. This is accomplished through an innovation called Dynamic Execution. This is the next step beyond the superscalar architecture implemented in the Pentium processor. These units contain 5.5 million transistors. Made in a single form factor consisting of a large, rectangular eight-socket unit, they were used in supercomputers. The CPU offers both dual- and quad-processor configurations necessary for speculative execution and complex process management. They have an x86 instruction set built into their core for rapid execution of tasks. This CPU is built with a decoupled, 14-stage superpipelined architecture with the instruction code programmed in binary. These were the earliest Intel core CPU products to allow for out-of-order execution. This allowed the CPU to execute multiple instructions simultaneously rather than waiting for each stage to complete. These Intel CPUs deliver the advanced 3-D visualization and interactive capabilities required by today's high-end commercial and technical applications. The Pentium technology also serves tomorrow's emerging applications and makes a plethora of features possible. The Pentium Pro processor also includes advanced data integrity, reliability, and serviceability features for mission critical applications. They have a maximum CPU clock rate of 150 MHz to 200 MHz. This allows them to deliver a fast response to multi-factorial applications. The processors are binary-compatible with applications running on previous members of the Intel microprocessor family. The system chips are optimized for applications running on advanced 32-bit operating systems. These products also have Dynamic Execution micro-architectural configurations. They have an FPS speed of 60 MHz to 66 MHz. This means that you will not have to wait for Internet pages to load while surfing the web. Their feature size is 0.35 micrometers to 0.50 micrometers, and they fit into the motherboard of most Windows computers built from 1995 through 1998.This CPU has a 36-bit address bus and can run operating systems including Windows NT, Linux, Unix, or Mac OS/2. The cache has access to up to 64GB of memory from the computer's motherboard. It also has an L2 cache. The L2 cache allows these CPUs to simultaneously access main memory and bus cache. These units are gold plated and manufactured in a 0.6 micrometer BiCMOS process that recycles metals such as silver. They also have an 8 KiB instruction cache. With this cache, the chip does not have to search for information. Its instructional packages feature decoding into 118-bit micro-operations. Each of the micro-operations provides the CPU with a code for an operation, two sources, and a destination. This Pentium Pro has six execution units: Two are integer units, one is a floating-point unit or FPU, one is a load unit, one that can store an address unit, and the last one can store a data unit. These divisions allow the chips to process up to five instructions per clock cycle, and these computer chip units come with information on how to install them.

  • Pentium Pro: The mid-90s powerhouse

For a processor of its age (late 1995 to early 1996) there is nothing quite like it. Debuting 1 and a half year before the Pentium II and about a year before the MMX-branded Pentiums, the Pentium Pro was able to flex its muscles unhindered by anything else on the x86 market in its heyday. It was fast, hot and with a high price to match it, largely purposed for heavy-duty server and scientific workloads. Even as a game machine it managed to make anything you tossed at it go much faster than anything before it. Was it a cost-effective processor for games? Perhaps not, but if it was top-of-the-line speed you needed it was speed that you received. After having used it to run Windows 95 OSR 2.5 for a while now, the 200Mhz Pentium Pro with its integrated 256KB L2 cache makes the system fly even with some extra bells and whistles running on top of the operating system's layer. Navigation is a breeze, especially with ample amounts of random access memory and with a somewhat more up-to-date hard drive it becomes even more evident. Tomb Raider (1996) runs without any hiccups at standard resolution and in hi-res mode is almost good enough to enjoy properly, but keep in mind that no machine from the 1994 to 1996 range could feasibly run a game at hi-res and have its frame rate live to tell about it. A 3D accelerator card (like an ATI Rage or a 3DFX Voodoo) is a necessity to get the most out of any Pentium Pro system. Even Interstate '76 (1997) manages to perform at a respectable rate, but its usage of the highly demanding Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries (1996) technology with its high emphasis on large outdoor environments with full texture-mapping demonstrates just how badly a game like this needed a 3D card to fly with a good pixel count. All in all, if you want the greatest killer machine for playing Quake (1996) in the day when it was brand new, the Pentium Pro will get you pretty far, and with a good 3D card installed will satisfy most of your demanding game needs for the remainder of the 20th century (and potentially a wee bit bit past that with a bit of luck).
