Sony takes the convenience, flexibility, and performance of MD to a whole new level in this all-in-one CD/MD system. Check out the High Speed (4 times) CD to MD Capability, Sampling Rate Converter, Edit Functions, and more features you just can't live without. Another great product from Sony, the leader in MiniDisc technology.MiniDisc recordings give you incredible fidelity, unsurpassed convenience, and amazing portability-because one pocket-sized blank disc can fit up to 74 minutes of music. 10 Second Digital Antishock Memory buffers 10 seconds of data in the unit's memory. If the unit is inadvertently bumped while in use, the system uses the information stored in its memory to keep the music going, uninterrupted. CD Text displays text from encoded CDs on the unit's display. Sampling Rate Converter allows digital recording from other digital media having different sampling frequencies, such as DAT and DIRECTV (audio channels), and automatically converts to MiniDisc rate. ATRAC is the acronym for Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding. This is a data reduction technology that uses the threshold of hearing and masking principles to analyze and record music digitally. Advanced Time Shift Recording actually captures music to disc six full seconds before you press the Record button. Non-Linear Recording and Playback allows the recorder to find blank spots on the MD and record onto them without interruption. Wide Bitstream Technology maintains 20 bit precision throughout the recording process, resulting in clearer reproduction from the softest passage to the loudest. Mono Extended Time Recording records almost 150 minutes of mono information on a standard mini disc, making it easy to record a long program like a lecture or speech without having to change discs. Shuffle Play allows the player to select tracks for playback entirely at random, adding a bit of variety to your listening.

Not well built, the unit I purchased did not function and even after repair attempt ( have allot of experience) the repair was not possible. This is very low quality in its build and components and there are far better units on the market

Best defunct piece of equipment I have ever purchased, and I have it al...from wax cylinders to digital "media" on the computer. It's probably a good thing I didn't have one of these 25 years ago...Awesome! Minidisc is the sheet! I also purchased a couple hundred discs and have been going thru the music that was left for me "erase". Best music format ever! I don't understand folks not wanting to "own" music these days...streaming...hmmm...I miss record stores.

This is a very early model or first stage of the mini disc era.
It plays original cd's but does not play recorded cd's, The Mini disc will not play LP recorded disc but if you record a mini disc from the cd it will play back what you recorded.
