Caution about open box items!

Needs more power than the older models.
This product is a good value for the money. It does what it claims and does it in a consistent manner. Be sure to put a brand new battery in the unit, not a used one. Unlike my 30 year old Zircon Stud Finder, only a new battery will provide enough power. That is my only issue with the device. The BEST Stud Finder That I've Ever Used!
These Zircon HD-55 stud finders are plentiful and affordable on eBay, and they are the best I've ever used. After looking at stud finders at the big box stores I decided to try eBay. Found the HD-55 and liked the deep range it has, as well as the WireWarning feature, and all at a fraction of the cost of the big box stores. Got it, used it, and I love it. Best Stud/Electrical Finder Available
Works absolutely flawlessly, with pinpoint precision, accuracy, and easy to use. This model has it all, and even the more expensive models don't seem to offer more. The light shows the EXACT edge to the beam, and this model also has the ability to switch from scanning at 3/4 of an inch, to scanning and 1 1/2 (actually 2) inches to find electrical wires if needed. Does an adequate job on drywall.
My usual method for locating studs in drywall is to run small rare earth magnets across the wall. When the magnet stops and hangs on the wall you can be sure you found the stud. When working on a section with no screws or nails you need a finder like this. This finder did not find the exact edge of my studs, but gave its alarm about 1/2 inch out on either side. Not a big deal, just measure the distance between the two hits and split the difference. If you're working on an older home with lathe and plaster, forget about it, you're gonna have to put holes in the wall to find your studs.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

The Zircon HD55 Works Well For Me
The Zircon HD55 Stud Edge Finder makes it quick and easy for pinpointing both edges of a stud. It warns you if your scan started over stud and to start rescan at a different location. It also indicates live wiring behind the wall. Just read the instructions to familiarize with it. Excellent stud finder!
For twelve bucks, you can't beat this item. Finds studs consistently and accurately. I'm just using this to hang shelves in my apartment but so far it has exceeded expectations. Definitely recommend.
