  • Buy it; you won't be disappointed

Having used the much cheaper Nikkor 70-300mm for a few years, mainly for wildlife photos, I decided to upgrade. I got great results with the old lens, but the 80-400mm is just next level. On the Nikon site, reviewers have commented that you shouldn't even think about buying this lens - just order it. They were right. Great detail, and with the extra magnification (it's on a D7100 DX body, so effectively 120-600mm) I can capture subjects nicely from greater distances. It's big and heavy, and I'm still getting used to the different center of gravity, but I'm really happy with the photos I've taken since it arrived.

  • Flexible Sports Lens

This is a really great lens for a broad range of uses. bought this lens to photograph yacht racing and have found it to be even better than expected. The VR feature has allowed me to hand hold more often and still get sharp results. Although I didn't plan to use it to photograph my grandchildren I have found it perfect in many situations. I'm using it on a Nikon D3, D2x, F5 and I have even used it on my old F3hp. Although the vr and auto focus does not work on the f3 the lens still takes takes great photos. Fantastic product.

  • Handy and so usefull!!

Somewhat heavier than I was expecting, but so is my D850. Sharp and responsive. Thought I might miss the "G"- removed functions, but haven't remembered to, yet. Haven't had it long enough to say its durable, (also don't plan on dropping it!). I appreciate the extended range over my old 80-200 f4 which hardly ever came off my old D300, and its so MUCH HANDIER than my 200-400mm F4 to reach out with. Overall: VERY NICE!

  • Expanded my photography opportunities.

First off, I bought this lens off eBay and it was pre-owned. For around $1,400 I am satisfied with it and have gotten some nice wildlife shots. Please see those attached...although they never seem to look as good when I post them somewhere. This is not a low light lens and to use it at 400mm on bleak days you have to crank up the ISO and even with the D750 I was getting a lot of noise. HOWEVER when we FINALLY got a sunny day I was very happy with the results I was getting. There is a learning curve to using this lens and it is - in my opinion - heavy. But I lug it around and am able to hand hold while shooting at what ever birds I can find for a couple hours or so. I have seen some photos taken with it that are absolutely amazing!!! I hope I can get that good. Much of the quality of the results the photographer will get depend on the users ability and skills and knowledge of the lens and camera they are using and their limitations. It is a nice lens and I am glad I made the purchase as it took my photography to a whole new level. It's not an f 2.8 or even an f 4 but it's very nice in great light and I love the zoom. The AF is very fast!!!

  • After bidding on 4 of these, I finally got one!

I had the older version of this lens and have been looking for the latest version for several months. Nikon's pricing (at retail) has come down quite a bit in recent months, but $2395 for a new one was outside of my budget! I found about a dozen of the newest version for sale on Ebay and after bidding on 4 other lenses, I finally got one for what I could afford. The lens is better than I expected! After using it on my Nikon D810, I discovered almost NO spherical aberration! So, all the hype about the latest version is true...it is tack sharp! It's slightly bigger than the original and weighs a bit more, but the filter size is the same as the original (77mm). I'm very happy with the lens and it's condition is as advertised.

  • Multifunctional zoom lens

Test shoots have gone well. Excellent value for photographers in search of a multi-use lens 80-400 zoom lens, from portraits to closeup sports action. Recommend additional purchase of monopod and video head, to ease shooting with this heavier lens.

  • Nice lens

Well built, sharp and for the price I paid, an excellent value. Less than half of retail for essentially a new product. Understand that this isn't a fast lens, and it functions best in bright light. I have been able to take some test shots indoors at night, hand held with pretty good results just to test it out, but I bought this primarily for outdoor sports/wildlife use.

  • Super sharp and fast lens

This lens is light, fast and super sharp and great for photographing wildlife and birds in flight. Its size and weight, compared to other long lenses, will allow me to take it on travel abroad. It is a little short at times, but its sharpness allows for cropping and enlarging without losing quality.

  • Nikkor 80-400 is a great lens

Used as a more mobile alternative to the Sigma 150-600 Sport. I have extensively tested the Nikkor 80-400 by itself, and with the TC-14 III Extender and the quality exceeds the Sigma at all ranges, including 560 (w/extender) vs. 600 with the Sigma. Much lighter, much faster to focus, overall a great lens. Used with Nikon d850.

  • OK I guess, will keep

The lens was high mileage with many signs of use. The lens has a yellowish dot in the middle that doesn't seem to effect the image. I think I could have done better for the same price.
