An Open Sound with Clear Highs For generations, many euphonium players have had to use a trombone mouthpiece. However, since trombone mouthpieces are built to fit the needs of a cylindrical bore, issues arise when used with a euphonium’s conical bore. Steven Mead euphonium mouthpieces are designed from the ground up with the unique characteristics of euphoniums in mind. Steven worked closely with the team at Denis Wick to produce the Steven Mead SM4 Euphonium Mouthpiece. It has a 26mm cup diameter, with a 7.38mm throat for high-end clarity and an open sound. It also has a barrel backbore for a touch less resistance. Players around the world, including a loyal group at Sweetwater, rely on Denis Wick mouthpieces for practice and performance.

The SM4 is a funnel-shaped mouthpiece that is different from the typical bowl-shaped mouthpieces like the Schilke 51D. I tried the SM4 a few years ago with a Yamaha Neo euphonium, but it didn't seem to do as well as my old standard Schilke 52D did. I currently play a Besson Sovereign and a Wessex Dolce euphonium. The SM4 seems to mate up well with them (Wessex includes a funnel-shaped mouthpiece with the Dolce). I think it is more free-blowing and has a more open sound than the Schilkes.
