powerful exterior graphics card, works great with a MBP 2018
I am just a 3D Hobbyist and find the playing field is ever decreasing with the cost of living crisis et al, I used to buy Modo 3D but since they went whole hearted subscription I just felt that the keen hobby person like myself just could not afford the £500 a year to put cubes on a screen. So I turned to Blender, the free open source 3D software, here's where my purchase comes into being and fruition. Attached to my 2018 15" MBP the Black Magic box plays a massive performance part in the rendering of my scenes, it whips through at an astonishing rate, maybe 4-5 times quicker than the internal graphics cards doing the jobs alone. Now I don't intend "pushing it" because I am just not that good yet at doing these 3D scenes, but with the help of the internet , YouTube, and on-line blender courses this is now ideal. People will agree - there is nothing worse than waiting for a render to complete as it takes over the whole computer, so at least this black magic takes the time it takes down. I'm just interested in modelling cars and such like, and interior designing of rooms. I believe that this Black Magic eGPU has now been discontinued because of a rift between Apple and Radeon (may be wrong) so I decided to try and get one on EBAY before they become scarce, also I could not justify buying a brand new model at £600 so this way was a gamble, still is in all due respect because buying second hand there is always the chance that the unit has had it's best days... this one came in it's original packaging and looks undamaged examining the outer case, it's a simple plug and play with just the one cable between the MBP and the RX 580 this Thunderbolt cable provided is only small (say 10") but perhaps there is a valid reason for it being like this (perhaps data transmission drops a great deal if length is increased) I have tried a 2M cable just to see and it works but I have had crashes in Blender that may be due to this. this cable also supplies the charging supply to the MBP and the RX 580 also has a second thunderbolt socket, a HDMI Socket for a Monitor and 4 usb sockets also which are very handy. Just to add you can't hear a thing when this baby is running, the only way I know it's on is a small light at the base, and an icon on the top of the MBP. Which you have to click to disconnect the Black Magic from the MBP. Very happy with the purchase.
