ReviewsQ (7/00, p.125) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A superbly stealthy assault on the ears, stroking and unsettling in equal measure." Magnet (8-9/00, p.93) - "...A culmination, for its operatic/cinematic soundscapes...are utterly unique....[He] proceeds with abandon while never losing sight of the essentials..." CMJ (1/08/01, p.20) - Included in CMJ's "Best of the Year" for 2000. CMJ (5/8/00, p.5) - "...[He] takes his drum-solo-driven sound out of the equivalent of a smoke-filled speakeasy and into the surreal....continuing to break new ground [with] morphed city noises....a kaleidoscopic supernova." Melody Maker (6/20/00, p.60) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Crazy guy, crazy music. Mixing super-dope beats with a selection of sounds straight out of 'The Twilight Zone' Brazilian-born Amon 'will' eat your brain. Top."
Additional informationThis disc is so textured, it practically suggests the sound of sludge. Dense samples are layered one on top of another, creating a thick, intriguing environment. The grooves are relentless, sometimes underpinned with a heavy bass drone. At times, like on the terrific "Rhino Jockey," wonderful tidal waves of sound come pounding out of the speakers. And even though some of record sounds like Ellington and Gershwin going to hell on a holiday with Alec Empire, there are plenty of more laid back and jazz-flavored moments. There's even the eccentric Quadraceptor doing his kooky human beatbox on "Precursor." But these are just the beginnings of this discs' many pleasures, which will reveal themselves upon repeated listens.
