An engaging crime series with a difference
George Gently takes a good look at policing in the 60's, both good and bad, but always entertaining. The bleak side of life at the time is depicted as well as the social taboos that were current. Despite this it is extremely funny at times and usually gives the viewer the satisfaction of knowing that justice was served, although sometimes in a way that would not be acceptable today. A different detective story
Each episode seems to select a different social theme to explore - usually in the context of a murder. Martin Shaw plays the honest, experienced investigator. Lee Ingleby provides the foil as his enthusiastic but inexperienced offsider who takes a completely different perspective of the social aspects of the case. English Crime Series with polish
Being a Martin Shaw devotee, I couldn't pass up a chance to own the complete series 1 to 7. Even having viewed the different episodes over the years, I've never tired of the plots and characterizations. The story lines are sophisticated and real-life as are the flawed characters of Gently and Bacchus. As a Baby Boomer, I lived through the era in which the various series are set.
