Portable camera with 30x optical zoom and other great features

I mostly take photos of butterflies and birds, some close up, some far away, and this camera does a GREAT job. The 30x optical zoom is fantastic. (You can't take a bad photo at 30x zoom for far-away shots.) And the 18.1 MP makes it possible to crop pictures and still maintain excellent resolution. Plus it is small, light weight, and portable. It fits in a shirt pocket very nicely and it's easy to grab at a moment's notice. Panasonic does an excellent job with Image Stabilization. It's very easy to hold the camera steady, even with one hand when taking close up pictures. (I've owned other Panasonics in the past and the Image Stabilization has been very good on all of them.) I couldn't be happier.

  • Top critical review

Picture quality & ease of use was fine.

Most was OK. The problem is that the eyepiece viewer was absolute junk. You could hardly make out any images through it. Everything was so distorted that it was hard to make out what you were looking at IF you could find it. Other thaan that the picture quality was ok & ease of use was ok.

  • Unbelievably great and unbelievably affordable camera!

Purchased for less than $155, delivered. (factory refurbished) At 18MP, can enlarge to poster-size with no noticeable loss of sharpness. Has WIFI - can transmit photos from camera to computer, to printer or to TV, wirelessly! Super telephoto to 60X, (amazing close-ups from far, far away) yet still fits in shirt pocket. Handles low lighting well. Has GPS - photos retain ID of where they were shot. Does panoramic shots with ease, and does virtual reality movies. And there's even more. No other camera on the market comes close to matching features and price. I was not compensated for this review.

  • Fantastic little camera - better pics than one 3 - 4 times the price

I've always been a fan of Lumix cameras because of their incredibly clear images. The lens is better quality than those on far more expensive cameras from Canon etc. And you can shove it in your pocket. Its zoom range is outstanding and images are equally sharp right through the range. I mostly let the camera select aperture and exposure but it is easy to switch to a manual or semi-manual mode to increase contrast etc. Panoramic shots are a breeze. The only thing I haven't got to the bottom of yet is connecting it wirelessly to my laptop which is on a school domain. The setup function on the camera is slow as it works like typing in a program name on a TV remote. I think I've got it under control but knowing which one of my many passwords it wants is not easy to figure out. Transferring pics via USB is dead easy, though so I'm not overly concerned about the wi-fi thing and, if your computer isn't on a domain, I'm sure you'd find the task very easy. I strongly recommend this camera if you want a lightweight camera that is easy to use, gives tremendous pictures and has a fantastic zoom range, the kind of thing I used to pay thousands of dollars to get from an SLR.

  • Excellent Camera, but Forget About Wireless Connectivity

A complex camera with amazing features, build quality, high-end Leica optics. It can do most anything a big SLR can do (but with no interchangeable lenses, of course.). Connects to PC via cable or SD card with ease. GPS works great. The only awful thing is WiFi connectivity to PC or direct to the internet (with or without Lumix Club) -- in other words, basically useless, especially when compared to ease of use with the cable. The on-line forums mirror my experience with regard to wireless connectivity. Wireless camera-to-smartphone connectivity is only a bit a better -- which isn't saying much.

  • These ROCK! (and take great pictures & video)

I have only one complaint about this... PROPRIETARY BATTERIES! If this thing used standard AA or AAA batteries, even a single 18650, it would seriously be 10x the review and recommendation! Because otherwise it's a solid, highly functional, very powerful pocket size camera. It's perfect to 'sneak in' to concerts that otherwise ban "REAL" cameras... and this little camera can seriously 'reach out and TOUCH PEOPLE!' (and nature). Great zoom for a pocket camera, and no real artifacts. It is pretty easy to operate, and has a whole lot of capability. It was solid enough I got a couple, with extra batteries & an external charger, to carry in the vehicles so we'd always have a camera available (that could take far better images than the cell phones). This IS A CAMERA... a very powerful pocket camera. Only downside is proprietary batteries. (but they are pretty cheap - so you can get 2 or 3 extras with an external charger).

  • Great Mega-Zoom

This is perhaps the best P&S camera going. It fits in your pocket and takes in creditable low light pictures. The zoom is great, the picture quality is excellent. I purchased this camera used (extra value) and will be taking it with me on vacation to Europe. The Wi-Fi is impossible to set up. But that's not the reason I purchased this Lumix. Purchase is mainly for the Leica lens and features, too may to mention here. I'm very happy with the ZS40.

  • Perfect Camera for our Europe Trip

We just came back from a 10 day excursion through Europe. I couldn't begin to tell you how pleased we were with this camera! Pictures were easy to take, it worked quickly when we needed it to work, and it was simple to use. We are now going through all 1275 pictures and reliving our adventure. Suggestion - purchase extra batteries. We went through THREE batteries on our busiest day while touring Paris.

  • 5 STARS!!!

I actually bought this camera for the HD video capabilities because I needed a second camera for my YouTube channel. I was a little leery about buying a manufacturer refurbished camera, but if there was ever anything wrong with this thing I'd never know what it is. Everything functions exactly as it should. I also discovered that it is a great camera to take with me on trips, as it shoots phenomenal HD video at 30fps/60fps. And it also takes great pictures, and is very user friendly, particularly if you're a novice photographer/videographer like me. I'm very happy with my purchase!

  • So many features - so little price

Who cares if it is two years old? Just two years ago it was selling for $450! I was able to get it for less than 150 now! Talk about depreciation. I am not a camera buff but it has enough goodies included (like wifi, zoom lenses and stuff) to make picture taking fun. How about wireless connecting your camera with your cell phone so that you can immediately upload your pictures? That's cool too.... Anyway...for the money it is an awesome value....
