Great DVR for recording TV programs

This is my second unit. The 1st one I bought at Walmart still works, after 2.5 years, using it to record approx. 12 hours per week, and then playback time. The instructions aren't very thorough, so you might have to practice with it a bit. For example, if you set it up for timer record, be sure to select "record" on the menu and not "view" which is the default setting. The remote's battery doesn't seem to last very long, so if the remote starts having issues, replace the battery. I thought my current unit broke because on startup it got to the RCA logo page & would go no further, but it turned out that the USB stick malfunctioned. Put in a new USB & the old recorder works perfect. For us old timers, if you know how to run a VCR, you can use this DVR!

    It does what it says

Admittedly, I didn't put this through all its paces, but it did work out of the box. My idea was to build a PVR with this and an external drive. However, I made a mistake thinking I could put this on a network drive and media share the recordings to smart TVs around the house. Not the product's fault, I didn't have all the things lined up. At any rate, I'm keeping this as an option for a standalone PVR connected to the one HDTV. As a side note: the channel reception wasn't any better or worse than the receiver I had previously connected to the antenna, so that's a plus.

  • Best Feature of this product

This product is Great, easy to use, easy to set up, but the Best Feature about this product is that it has an Add Channel Scan option, you can just Re-scan, to see if there are any new channels available Or to regain any channels that you may have lost due to seasonal changes (like the trees being in full bloom and blocking the signal) Without losing the channels you already have due to antenna placement Or being able to change the antenna placement to see if you can get other channels then, Without losing the ones you already have, That's Great!

  • works great

I know some mentioned about the remote not working. But it does work. The reason it didn't work was because the battery arrived wasted which a simple battery replacement gets it going. I do wish they used the typical and less expensive batteries. Also the plastic case is made of low cost plastic. Other than that, this device works great and records onto a usb drive and you can use the video on your computer. Pretty cool. Also has buttons to change the channels on the unit itself incase you lose the remote. Surprised that it doesn't have a record button on the unit, I would have liked that. I would still recommend this unit over a plain atsc digital converter box which costs the same or more but can't record and don't even have hdmi output.

  • No instructions included, a little computer knowledge requiered.

Everything promised arrived on schedule. A little ackward to go thru the operation, of the main features. If you are a plug and play type. (VCR Style) you may want to stay with a DVR. I could not stay up for the election, but I put the thing on record and got over 2.2 hours of 1080P video for the acceptance speech and those awesome Trump girlsl

  • Inexpensive OTA /recording-

Not a very flashy product, but way cheaper than a Tivo/tablo recorder- with the addition of a $15 sandisk drive ready to record a couple of hours of OTA television- the remote is a little punky, but if you read the instructions , works ok- basic channel descriptions on screen too- cheap and painless upgrade for cord cutting and if it doesn't hold up I can buy another one!

  • A good value for OTA TV.

For those who go with over-the-air broadcast TV, the RCA DTA880 is hard to beat. For the price, it is a great value and performs well. The use of the remote control is a bit "clunky" (slow in response) till you get used to it, but the simplicity of the whole system is good. If you want to be able to record a program while watching a different show, get a coax splitter for your antenna and then have one output go to the recorder and one to the tv (consider also using a signal amplifier if you do this because splitting an antenna signal will necessarily cause the signal to lose strength). For the recording medium, any USB connected drive will work, BUT, I have found it best to use a hard drive with a write speed of 7200 RPM. This is because, with high def TV (720 or 1080) programs, some mediums (like a flash drive) will have a hard time keeping up with the output from the recorder (not the fault of the recorder) and you will see "skips" of missed data when you watch it. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the response time using the remote control is slow, but overall the system is worth it.

  • Surprise Surprise

I Never did have any luck with indoor or outdoor antennas. My friend showed me his and although I have cable, I had to have this also. Great backup system. Has programs and channels unavailable on cable. This item even has a programmed record feature. You can record your favorite program and fast forward through the commercials like cable.

  • Record well

I like this unit easy to set up initially, The only problem is that it has a mind of it's own on scheduled recordings. I will start and stop the recordings 3 minutes early or 3 minutes late, I have yet to figure the best time to get it to record a complete show. Receives signals well.

  • Good unit.

Purchased this unit to record OTA TV. It does exactly what it's supposed to do. It receives every OTA station that my Samsung large screen does. It takes a bit of time to learn it's functions, but it records from extended program schedule with no problems. I would suggest watching the YouTube videos to get started.
