A Gun for Hire Who Would Rather Use His Mind Than His Gun to Solve Problems
Maybe you have heard of one of the regular writers on this series -- Gene Roddenberry? This series & the ideas it presents were far ahead of its time. It is more about problem solving and AVOIDING gun fights than any other Western program starring a gun fighter than I have ever seen or heard about. The hero isn't infallible and issues have to be resolved quickly in a half hour format. This was filmed back when there were 36 or more shows per season, so 6 seasons of shows is a lot of product for the price. There is more information on the episodes in the 1st couple seasons than in the last. Unfortunately, one thing I enjoyed in the format of the show got dropped before the end. The show used to start with the Hero, face unseen read a line of dialog from the upcoming episode while keeping his gun trained on the camera. The hero is well read in classic literature and often lets loose with quotes that he feels apply to the situation. Usually he is throwing these quotes at illiterate people. Sometime those people will even say, "Well, I don't follow any of that but anyway ...." Love it!Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Have Gun Will Travel was and still is a great series. However, the set I received was subtitled in Spanish only. With so many U.S. seniors growing up when it was being produced, why would you not be planning for them to be purchasing this particular series?, Why no English subtitles? Great DVD's --- But .......
I already had the first and second year series DVD's. They came in separate year boxes. I guess that's what I expected to get when I bought the entire 35 DVD package. I was surprised when all 35 discs were in the same single case. Don't get me wrong, they are great to have, but I went out and bought a computer disc folding "wallet-type" file so I could make them easier to access. When I want to view a program, say from the 5th season, I don't want to dig through seasons 1,2,3, and 4 to get to them. Now I can just flip the pages and go directly to season 5 or whatever. A VERY GOOD DEAL ON THE DVD'S, but the packaging left something to be desired for me --- that's why it only got 4 stars.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

I have enjoyed the short stories. They could bring the series back today with new stories and it would be a hit again like it was on late 50's early 60's friday night TV! Just the best!!
In my humble opinion this is the best western series ever. It is very different in that it gets down to the character level at a high level. As far as the DVD the picture is very crisp for a '60s production. I do have to turn the sound up more than on most shows. But no big deal on the sound.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Great set of DVDs ! Loved this program the best TV western ever produced. Richard Boone did a bang up job. I watched as a kid with my dad towards the end of the series run. Great story telling and plots with a lot of action in a 30 minute program. Lots of episodes directed by Gene Roddenbury of Star Trek before he created that show . Great dvd visual and audio quality with selections for production notes on the actors in the episodes . A great series from the late 1950's
This is a great series made at the height of the TV western craze. At the time, it was considered "the thinking man's western." The stories are interesting, well acted and in many cases include characters and situations based on actual people and events of the period. Saddle up, you will enjoy the ride.
