Easy to grab and shoot makes this my go to camcorder!

We needed something between our cell phones and the Nikon to shoot quick video, and be able to carry into the woods and trails as we do lots of outdoor activities. The R50 has really been great. It shoots amazingly good video for such a small, lite weight, camera, and the price was hard to beat. About the only thing, that is not perfect about this little camera is the viewing screen is really hard to see in bright sun light, and you constantly have to shade it with your hand to see what you just recorded, but that is the case with all open screen camcorders even the really big. pricy ones. The external mic jack is a real plus for shooting outdoors in the wind, and around running water, and zoom performs very well for a cammy in this price range. I would recommend the little Cannon R50 to anyone that's looking to shoot video short of commercial video.

    Almost hit the mark

Video quality is A++ but the wifi features are very misleading and I'll explain why. Most older Camcorders either allowed you to control zoom and recording via an infrared remote or a LANC controller. The canon vixia series with wifi: h50, h60, etc have wifi control features but it is really almost useless because: 1. You can only use it via their remote app 2. The remote app is a HASSLE to setup for many reasons: you need a router that has UPnP capabilities (most do) but that is not always the norm. 3 Connecting to the camera directly via wifi does not always work with the app: this is mainly due to the camera nto having a real DHCP server onboad - my Android phone 5.0 does not get an IP address because of this issue, but my PC does. 4. You can only record to the phone or on the camcorder while wifi is engaged. The HDMI out to a capture device or monitor will be disabled 5. The zoom control response time from the app is really bad because the server on the camera is serving out video via HLS and when you send a command via wifi for it to zoom it joins the queue for all the video requests that came before it, so the change is not immediate Should you not need the HDMI out while controlling via wifi then this camera is a good bargain, but if you expect to control the camera while its connected via HDMI to a capture card or something else don't bother as it wont work. Do I recommend this camera, no save your money and get the H500 or H600.

  • Great Zoom (Records direct to DVD format and to Net "mp4")

Camera has a lot of features that that are used in various combinations. The zoom is fantastic with excellent active image stabilization. A big step up from what I was using. This thing can do great video selfies with the viewscreen flipped around - in full 1080p/60fps. WOW. If you are serious about a great picture, put the cellphone away............

  • Great features for the price

The camera has an audio input, which was top priority for me. Shooting quality is amazing for the price and wi-fi capable. Battery length is pretty good and records internally or onto a removable SD card, so you will never run out of space. There is no shoe, hot or cold. This wasn't important to me, but if you think you'll need to carry a mic or light around, you may need to look elsewhere. Also the lens cover does not close when you shut the camera off, so you will have to remember to close it manually.

  • This camera is OK

At this price, I cannot complain about this camera. It is easy to use after you have set the picture quality settings, If you go by AUTO mode, picture quality is not good, lot of color saturation. I am using low light setting mode bcas it is mostly low light in seattle. With low light mode, picture quality is good. I wish the camera could adjust to low light setting when setting automatically when it is in AUTO mode.
