Claimed 9-hour battery life has not been observed

There is still some way to go to catch Macbook Air, but I am happy Microsoft is reviving with this little competitive product. Overall I like it and want to keep it along with my Macbook Air. But there are a few ideas that I would like to share with Microsoft to make it better. First, the battery life is substandard. It is claimed to have 9 hours, but it typically last 5-6 hours for daily use. I think it can do better by utilizing unused spaces such as kickstand or keyboard to add additional power. They should also consider solar energy to supplement. Second, the keyboard should use bluetooth and in a detached state all the time except that it acts as cover when not in use. I personally want to use it as a tablet with an external keyboard (like iPad Pro), not the ability to switch back and forth. As a laptop, this cannot compete with Macbook as it is now and probably not in the future given its size restriction.

    Surface Pro 3 OK

I'm surprised at how quickly the battery drains. Other than that, it is a great tablet. Keyboard is excellent. Bought this used surface 3 on ebay. In excellent condition and am slowly getting used to the windows tablet interface after years of Android tablet. The integration with my laptop is great and the direct connect to onenote via the pen is fantastic. I still feel the need to get to my Android apps.. There is an ease of use with Android that is not quite the same in windows. Microsoft and Google continue to make the integration with things like an app for google maps very difficult. Gmail is pretty easy to integrate into outlook. They need to get over it and connect.

  • A few unexpected inconveniences

Somehow in all of my researching before I made the purchase, I didn't notice that surfaces only have ONE USB port. It's not a huge deal at all but if I want a mouse plugged in, I have to disconnect it if I want to print, then reconnect it when I'm done. A small inconvenience. Beyond that, installing any Linux distro is a bit of a pain. The UEFI setup on this is very plain and lacks a lot of options and info. If you install Linux, odds are that your distro of choice will not recognize the surface keyboard trackpad (unless it works for newer models of the keyboard). So far the only one I know works is Ubuntu. There is a package that you have to install for it to recognize the trackpad. The little binged flap takes getting used to. You can't really use it on your lap (at least not comfortably). Enough of the bad! It is a very fast Computer due to the SSD and CPU. It's got plenty of guts to do what I need a computer to do. I love using it for note taking. For those who care about display, it has a beautiful display. High resolution and high ppi.

  • Great Tablet with a horrible camera

Anytime you can use a full operating system on a tablet, you have a great product. Add the keyboard and it's an excellent product. The screen is not just good, but amazing. That's the good. The ugly is the camera and the battery life. You'll get five to six hours TOP with normal use at work or at home. Understand I'm comparing the battery life to Apple products which, plain and simple, have unbelievable battery life. The camera, however; is another subject. It is the worst camera on a tablet I have every seen, and cameras on tablet are normally pretty awful. Why would you care about a camera on a tablet anyway? Well, because of the amazing Microsoft Onenote application. If you don't know this built in application on Windows, get to know it because it's amazing to use on a Surface. And one of the great features it has is the ability to take a picture (of a document), bring it into the application automatically, and then mark it up using the stylus. Sounds great right? Not with a Surface Pro 3. The camera is so bad that you can't even take a picture of a document sitting on the table right in front of you which, in turn renders this great feature unusable. Apparently, the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 4 don't have this problem. Yes, I said Surface 3. All that said, I use it at work every day and I love it... except the camera... and the battery.

  • Lightweight w/ awesome features

Great laptop. Wish it had a much longer battery life and I have to get the touchscreen fixed, but that's fine. Everything else is great quality and fully functional.

  • The surface is great!

Its the best of both words, Excellent for doing all work but also excels in doing normal stuff like Facebook, Netflix, hulu ect... because its a tablet too. and with the kickstand it makes it great for table and bed use. The Only thing i would tell you to do if you want to buy ine of these is to get the type cover 4 made for the surface pro 4. That has a superior keyboard and track pad, it also has a fingerprint sensory on it. And if you buy the SP3 you will need a keyboard.

  • Great Device!

Purchased this device used so was expecting some wear. Had a small scratch on the screen and slight wear on the back. Device works great and as described. Light weight and easy to travel with and powerful enough to run the programs I need for my business.

  • The best tablet that can easily replace your laptop

I am so happy I decided to get this Surface Pro 3. I did not want to spend the money for the Surface Pro 4 so I opted to get this Surface Pro 3 instead and I have no regrets. I updated it to Windows 10 as soon as it arrived. Then when the Windows 10 anniversary update came out I updated to that and it resolved any issues. If functions great and I love the type cover keyboard as I am using it to write this review. Mine has the 128GB SSD hard drive but I was able to add a 128GB SD card and moved my Onedrive files to the sd card which saves a lot of space on the hard drive. I have Office 365 and a few other programs installed and I still have 99GB of free space. This device works for everything I need it for. Nice and portable and I take it everywhere with me. I picked up a portable power bank so I can recharge it anywhere even when no AC outlets are available. In closing I would highly recommend the Surface Pro 3 for daily use you will not be disappointed.

  • Worth every penny!

The Surface Pro 3 is a great computer. It took a little adjusting getting used to the flat typecover, but after adjusting, I like it a lot. The keys have very little downward travel. It's like typing on a desktop, just tapping your fingers. Display is awesome, and it boots to the desktop very, very quickly. The 128 GB drive could be a little bigger, but even with Office 2013 installed, I still have lots of room left. It's much faster than a sightly older HP laptop with an Intel core i3 processor. The track pad leaves a lot to be desired. It's too sensitive, giving some unwanted results. A separate mouse is a must. I just ordered a bluetooth mouse to avoid tying up the only USB port. A 2nd USB port would have been nice, but with a bluetooth mouse, you can work around this limitation. Excel, Word and Outlook run extremely fast. Well worth the money.

  • Surface Pro 3

I've always been a fan of the Surface line from the first gen to the Surface book. These devices are worth the money spent on them. They are very versatile, intuitive, and they help you stay productive or entertained. As with any battery powered device you'll need to tweak power consumption to maximize battery life and be sure to calibrate the battery at least once a month by draining it below 10% as Microsoft recommends or you can go as little as 2%. Microsoft also doesn't recommend leaving the device on the battery for extended periods of time. These devices are great. Since I started with my RT, the use of my laptop declined and stopped with the Surface Pro 2. I don't think I'll need another laptop or computing device aside from this one. I have managed to make it to 48% battery life after 9hrs. This managed power settings and light use taking notes at times w/o Bluetooth for the pen, toggling the Wi-Fi, 45% brightness. During the web use I downloaded a few small apps from store, streamed Xbox games from my console.
