SynopsisLAIKA, the studio behind the hit films Coraline and ParaNorman , introduces audiences to a new breed of family: the Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs in the amazing cavernous home they've built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town's villain, Archibald Snatcher, comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnie to devise a daring plan to save Eggs' family. The Art of The Boxtrolls features the amazingly detailed artwork that went into this film's creation, including character sketches, puppets, textiles, set dressing, and 3-D printed facial models, alongside the story of the film's development.
Just like anything that Laika does, this book is top flight. I was very excited to find out this book existed. As an animation instructor, I am always looking for material to inspire my students. This book is a wonderful companion to the film. It gives the hows and whys of production and plenty of background information to please anyone interested in the art form. More than one of my students was to "go to there (Laika)" when they are ready to step into the big time.
I love stop-motion animation, especially that done by Laika Studios. It is so great to know that every single thing that you see on the screen was made by somebody by hand.
This book about the Boxtrolls is wonderful. It's packed chock full of photos showing the whole process of making the movie. Starting with creating the story it then takes you through the concept art that sets the style of the look of the sets and characters to the creation of all the physical elements needed to fill up that world.
The text and photos combine to give you a great deal of information about how decisions are made and how objects and puppets get made -- sometimes out of some really unexpected materials. Lots of fantastic and pertinent technical information! I am very happy with this book and extremely glad I bought a copy to keep. I will be reading/looking at this often in the future.
