Season one, volume one, of 'Outlander' is an American-British television drama series based on the historical time traveler series by writer Diana Gabaldon. The Blu-ray and Digital HD 2-Disc set includes the first eight episodes. Set in Scotland in the year 1743, the series tells the story of a married nurse transported there from just after World War II. She is forced to marry a Highlander and is tormented by her love for him. Special features include 'The Dresses and Kilts of Outlander', 'An Epic Adaptation', 'Blu-ray Exclusives: Casting Outlander,' 'On Location: Castle Leoch and the Magic of Scotland,' and deleted scenes.
Fans of the book series will love - and I am and I do - seeing these characters personified. The writers, directors, and casting artists have chosen well. Yes, there is a bit of "smooshing" details into one scene for the sake of storytelling; however, the results are very close to the actual story written by the author. I love the detail in the scenery, costumes - they look so authentic to the period, and language. After reading the novels, the images created by Diana Gabaldon truly emerge on screen in this DVD series.
First, let me say that you need BOTH Volume I and Volume II to get the entire first season and while not for the faint of heart, this is and incredible story. Outlander has stayed remarkably true to the first book of the Diana Gabaldon series, or maybe not so remarkably since the author is an active consultant on the series.
Outlander is gritty, realistic, sometimes hard to watch, and I found it completely impossible to tear myself away from it. Yes, there is nudity, but the nudity is nothing more than present in the story, and I am a typical American prude and did not find it offensive. The last two episodes of Volume II were sometimes hard to watch as they courageously tackled the issues of torture and rape in a disturbingly realistic manner. These things are occurring daily today in war and terror torn parts of the world and closing our eyes to it does not make it go away. Outlander approaches these things from the correct perspective of truth, showing them to be the desire of evil people toand dominate and control, nothing to do with sex. The psychological effects are explored in depth, and yes it hard to watch Jamie and Claire struggle through these two episodes, coming to terms with the aftermath of evil. If the end of this season does not tear your heart out, you may not have one, but it is an incredible testament to the power of love. The closing scene of the final episode, To Ransom A Man's Soul, left my eyes filled with tears of joy and hope for these wonderful characters for Season Two.
From a technical standpoint, the history and geographical beauty of Scotland is nothing less than another character that does not appear in the list of credits. The acting is truly the best I have ever seen. It was intensely done, sometimes funny, sometimes painful, I could see nothing of the actors in the characters. The characters were simply their own beings, as if they were truly living individuals. Always, adding to the beauty of Scotland, the joy of love, the intensity of a whole range of emotions, is the amazing music of Bear McCreary, surely one of the most talented people in the industry. Outlander is the best thing I have ever watched and I am looking forward to Season Two more than I can say.
Excellent storyline somewhere between fantasy and historical fact, the garb and day to day life depicted is as real as it can get in a high speed tale of fantasy, well interwoven with enough personality to keep you waiting for more.. a great tale.
Absolutely amazing TV series! Could not stop binge watching on Starz. Was very excited to get them. Best show ever! Case was broken. Probably happened in the mail. Suggest bubble wrap for future shipments.
