Great addition to expand an existing Orbi AC3000 system

Great for those that already have an Orbi AC3000 mesh router system and just want to add a satellite to their network setup. I bought this specifically to put in my son's room in order to use the built-in ethernet ports to set up a wired connection for his gaming systems. I was actually surprised in speed tests how much better using the wired ethernet ports on the satellite were compared to using wi-fi alone (particularly since the Orbi system still uses a wireless connection between the router and the satellites). I found that using a wired connection on the satellites is about 50% faster in throughput than a wireless wi-fi connection.

Not as good as I hoped

I got this hoping to provide high speed connectivity throughout my house however thecspeed, while fairly consistent, is roughly 1/3 of what my previous router provided (albeit without the coverage area). Additionally, connectivity is not consistent with drops and reconnect throughout the fay.

  • Great way to extend & strengthen existing Orbi network

I have an Orbi router + satellite in my 1920s house with plaster & lath walls, so signal propagation was not great - especially in my home office. Netgear charges a ridiculous amount for add-on satellites if you buy one new. I even thought about buying another router + satellite (which is often cheaper than an add-on satellite alone!) and toss the router, but that seemed too wasteful. So buying the satellite used seemed like a much better option. At first it worked ok, but was kind of flaky. I had to play with it a while before I figured out how to connect to the satellite directly - when it was working with the router and I connected via my browser, it would spin for a long time and refused to accept my password. I finally did a factory reset, removed it from the router's config, and connected via ethernet. When it finally let me connect, the problem was clear: it was several revisions out of date on firmware, so my router didn't communicate correctly with it. I had to update it in 3 steps to make it work. Now I've had it running for a week and it's great. The dead spot in my office is totally gone - I get close to 300 Mbps on internet speed tests. I haven't tested the wifi speed internal to my network, but qualitatively it's super fast.

Unit works as expected so happy with ny purchase. Item was discolored, yellowish compared to my existing ORBIs (possibly came from a smoky environment). Since i have in area not really visible to guest it doesn't bother me.

  • I have wireless extended my internet 100s of feet away from the source!

Decent mesh solution if you can get the config right. Make sure daisy-chain is ALWAYS OFF. The network is always very unstable with this setting turned on, but with it disabled it seems to be very solid. Also, you have to be patient on boot up, changes, or physically moving the units around. You may find yourself frustrated because it's not working and then try something else, but take it from me, give it some time to "settle" before you make another chage.

  • Works well with modest tinkering and networking knowledge

It is as portrayed and acts as a true satellite. Caveat - needs some tinkering and networking knowledge to: reset to factory settings, then hardwire (CAT 6 cable) to original router to get firmware update, and then disconnect the CAT 6 cable and reboot. Then log into the ORBI router and connect but also need make its user name and password the same as the original router. So expect a couple of hours of tinkering and multiple reboots to get it working. I now have a larger mesh network (1 router and two satellites) so dead spots are things of the past. It lost one star for the extra time to get it correctly connected. I am spoiled to plug and play devices.

  • Checks off ALL the boxes - achieve the goal!

Just what I was looking for. We have an early (gen 1) Orbi RBR50 system with one satellite. Goal was to expand the system with a second satellite. Not hard to set up with the Orbi admin portal. Established a good backhaul to the base. Amazingly, despite a weakish signal on that floor, it's achieving max throughput of my Fios connection with low latency. Orbi magic!

  • You won't be disapponted

I've had a lot of luck with this product. I purchased one previously and it is acting as a wireless switch for "wired" connections (connects to router wirelessly). It is providing full 300 GPS to the wired devices vis MOCA, one of which is this product. It, in turn is acting as a switch/wireless access point. I'm getting 80% of my 300 Gps in the room in which it is wired to first one.

  • The add-on RBS50 satellite works just as it should.

In December 2019 I added an Orbi RBS50 refurbished satellite to my existing Orbi RBK50 system. Followed the online instructions for adding a new satellite and it synchronized with my system without incident. This is the 2nd time I purchased an item from the Hitex Store. Each item has worked precisely as they should and I saved some cash by buying refurbished items. Good job Hitex.

  • Orbi RBS50 Working Great

The router is working as advertised. It was a bit tricky to get it paired up with my existing RBR50 but that's only because the instructions that came with the RBS50 left out the part that I had to press the SYNC button on the router as well to get them paired up. It has been working great since I received it.
