    Sometimes manual is best.

I tried the easy configuration with buttons on the extender and on the router. Although the extender configured Itself, Nothing I did could make an internet connection, just local. The very first time I used the manual configuration and named the extender something other than my routers name, everything worked as expected. I was able to use the RJ45 port to the extender and access the internet and I was able to get Roku Stick to use it.

  • Top critical review

Good product, comes in multiple hardware versions.

There are three hardware versions of this product. Versions 4, 2, and 1.2. They all look the same. I received version 1.2 of the hardware that lacks some firmware features available on later hardware. I would likely rated this a four based on ease-of-use and performance in my application, taking a point away for the poor location of the ethernet connector. Physical: the unit is lightweight and fairly compact. Depending on what you need to plug in, it may or may not impede using the other socket in a common U.S. wall outlet. The position of the ethernet connector is not ideal, however. If you plug in an ethernet cable, it hangs down and restricts the ability to plug anything except small plugs (like for a table lamp) or special low profile plugs into the other socket. Version details: The latest hardware version is version 4 and version 2 seems well supported. If you go to the manufacturer's support site, the latest firmware update for v1.2 is from 2014, whereas for v2 and v4 hardware, the latest updates are from 2017. Based on the online user guides from the manufacturer, it appears that the v1.2 firmware features are significantly different in the user interface and lack some features for turning the repeater off based on time of day and some other low level settings. I wound up with version 1.2 of the hardware and a unit that lacked a serial number. If this matters to you and the information is not provided in the listing you may want to check or ask the seller about the h/w version and serial number before purchasing. Use and performance: Set up was easy and I didn't need any of the later firmware features that are not available on v1.2. I bought the unit to use as an Ethernet bridge rather than a repeater. The repeater says I'm getting a 40% signal level from my router. Using wireless N I get a 144 Mbps wifi connection. Checking my outside internet access, I get about 1 to 2.5 Mbps drop in download throughput from going through the repeater. Reliability: For my version of the hardware, I've found that the unit keeps the connection although I have on a couple of occassions found the unit blinking in some error mode after a couple of weeks of operation. When this occurred, unplugging and replugging the unit restores operation. Keeping the unit in an accessible location where you can see the status lights is probably a good idea. The newer hardware versions may be better. I don't know. Closing: Overall, the unit was a very good value for what I needed. It has been generally reliable and gives good performance as an Ethernet bridge. While bought it to use as a bridge, as a bonus the unit does boost the signal to areas where I didn't have wifi before - mainly the back yard and in the far corners of my garage.

  • Sleek design but...

I have used range extenders in the past, but have had difficulty maybe because of the metal buildings I am dealing with. This device works ok, it does what it is supposed to do, but it still is not enough to get signal more than 10-15' out of the building. I have a garage that is a mere four feet from the main structure and the signal doesn't get 'inside' the building. One of the easiest to set up, best looking and feels like quality. Looks like a Ferrari, haven't gotten the performance yet.

  • Good alternative at a reasonable price

Good product priced very reasonably. However not all set ups are as easy as in the instructions. It didn't work I spent several hours with tech-support from overseas trying to get my unit connected. It does the trick but you will experience slower Internet speed in those areas. There's other alternatives if that's an issue overall for the money can solve those dead zones in your home

  • Not sure this extender is the solution to my problem

The setup was not as easy as hoped. It would not set up using the WPS function on my router and the Range Extender so I had to set it up manually with a PC. Also, it will not work if it's too close to your home's router (a light glows yellow to indicate it's too close.) I tried several locations between the router and the room I was trying to serve with a better WiFi signal (per instructions) and all those locations were "too close". So it's installed at the far end of my house. I can't tell for certain that the location I was trying to improve is actually using the extender or my router (once set up the network name and login are the same for the router and the extender.) This may make no difference...but my neighbors can probably better see my WiFi network (LOL).

  • The TP-Link TL-WA850RE does what it's suppose too!

I am pleased with the increased wi-fi speed in our living room. The room is furthest away from our wireless router and our Roku/Amazon Firestick was lagging. This device was easy to set up...took about 7 minutes and increased our wi-fi signal from poor to very good. The downside as I soon found out was that the device seemingly pulls the wi-fi from one area while decreasing it in others. I know this sounds odd but I have confirmed it through tests performed in my home. When it's plugged in my (detached) home office (on the opposite side of the property) signal becomes weak. I found it rather interesting that this was the case. Yes it works but at a cost of reduced speeds elsewhere in our home. So I found my self unplugging the TP-Link when not in use. I would recommend that you do the same...unless you're in a small space.

  • Works Great to Extend the wireless signal from main router

I was skeptical about buying this product because I wanted to extend my main router signal out to the garage. And everything that the signal has to penetrate, I did not think it would work. After linking the device to my router, I plugged it in and the wireless range has full bars. THe TP link extender allows for 3 ways to set up. It plugs right into the outlet. I like having the lights for troubleshooting connection as well as signal. The distance of the range extended or me is only about 20 ft but I am sure that it would go much further than that. I just did not see how far it would reach

  • Good Value

This is a nice little range extender for the money. It was easy to setup. I was a little concerned since one published review indicated a maximum range of 75 ft. I needed an inexpensive wi-fi access point so I wouldn't have to run cable into the basement. In spite of the wi-fi signal going through several walls and flooring, it still gets three bars out of five. This little range extender is working nicely for my needs.

  • Nice WiFi extender

I've tried various extenders previously. Although I could not quick WiFi connect it 😰 the TP link did connect quickly, easily and reliably using router WiFi method. It it a really nice product with very good range of boost. Speed test app on my android phone showed very good numbers at 2.4ghz and great at 5 ghz. Very good range. Recommended at 4 to 5 stars 👍😊

  • Increased wifi 25x+

No instructions came with mine. What you have to do to get it to work is.... 1 plug it in and let it power up. 2 locate and push the button marked WSP on your wireless router until the light on the router blinks. 3 push the button on the range extender. Lights on the display will light depending on the strength of the signal in the location of the extender. You will locate the extender at the location you want the signal amplified. 4 turn on your wifi device, go to settings, setup, or whatever and log in. The amplified network will show the same name as your unamplified network but with an _EXT extension. Log in with the password you use for your unamplified network and you should be able to join the _EXT network. Just for "S & Gs", run a speed test before and after! Wireless download speed on my home wifi in my remote workshop went from less than .30 meg to 13+ meg after instillation. My mobile devices are Apple, the procedure may be different for other operating systems. If you have problems, search the Internet using the Wifi's Model #
