No need for a tablet or phone. Setup to fly drone takes 30 seconds vs 5 min setup w phone... Im not seeing better range w smart controller vs the regular remote or battery length. Good Results With My dji Smart Controller
The build quality of this controller seems very high: It feels solid and fits well in your hand. The screen is bright enough to see in high sunlight and in overcast conditions. It is true, in that it makes your startup time a bit quicker vs using a smartphone for your main controller. I found it very easy to use. If you are really into flying drones quite a lot, it might be a good investment for you, since you get the added benefits of a bit more control over your craft and the fact that you can use it to control other DJI drone models, such as Mavic Pro 2 for example, and is easily switchable from one drone to another right there on the spot. Get in flight faster!
(REFURBISHED) CONs: Expensive (near the price of 2 DJI Mini 2). No real rebate for having a refurbished. You still need to unscrew-rescrew the joystick like the stock remote for transport. Takes a long time updating firmware (close to an hour even if my internet is a true 50Mbps) Power charger was missing in the package (refurbished) USB cable for charger was there but unreliable and flimsy. Slow to recharge. PROs: You save at least a good 2 minutes of preparation from the bag to flight (which is the main reason I bought this remote) The weight of the device reflects the price (heavy and sturdy) Although bigger than the mini2's stock remote it still fits in the bag that comes with the Fly More option. Performs very well with my DJI Mini 2. Pairing was done easily with menus and help screen, it took me 3 minutes to find it in the menu and execute it. Screen is much bigger than my phone (Google Pixel 4a) Handles data transmission issues better than with the regular remote + my phone Regular remote + my phone = about once a flight, when the distance makes the signal low, the screen would sometimes freeze, accelerate to recover and eventually app crash DJI Smart Controller = When communication issues the missing frames are skipped rapidly and the system comes back to normal way faster. No app crash yet. (This is the secondary reason my I bought this remote) Not having to plug/unskin/place phone is a bliss.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Great accessory--but not necessary
It's really neat to have. Is it necessary? No. You can do quite well using the original DJI controller. However, is it a lot faster to get your drone in the air. You don't have to load the app, then connect your cell or tablet to the controller and then connect to the drone, etc. I'm using it with a Mini 2 which is really overkill for this little drone, but the picture is much clearer than on my Galaxy S8 and brighter in the sun. DJI Smart Controller ads comfort and confidence to flight.
Although expensive, the DJI Smart Controller is far superior to the standard controller. Unfortunately I did not purchase as a combo with the Mavic 2 but purchased separately. In any case, it is a solid build that fits the hands better, far better screen and no hassle of fiddling with attaching a smart phone. I have had no issues with updates and can tether to my iPhone during flight for map updates if needed.
