This is a good high capacity router.
It is great for alternate firmware like OpenWRT since the chips do not require proprietary firmware. Lots of flash, RAM and CPU power make VPN, web server or other apps supportable within the router. However one must open the case and use a serial port adapter the first time non-Linksys FW is installed.

Hardware is excellent, signal level is very high and de application is very easy and useful. But when you are login to the App it sends the User I'd and password in plain text, https is not used. This is a huge security breach.

a great router
This linksys ea8500 router is better than I expected. The internet speed to my computer more than tripled (21 mbs to 71 mbs) from my old linksys router ea6500. It had been a few years since I had installed a new router and it took me a while. I was not sure where the wps button was and the directions were not as clear as I needed. But I found my way after a couple of hours. A more experienced computer person probably would do it in 10 minutes. I am impressed with this router especially since I did not expect this large improvement in performance/speed. It is a keeper.

This is a great router
I recently needed to replace my old router so I consulted consumer reports and this model was rated very high. It was more than I wanted to spend but I wanted good, solid wifi all over my 2 story house so I bought it anyway. It was very easy to set up, and I now have two networks in my house. The 2.4 ghz network and the 5 ghz one. So far both networks are fast and reliable. I am very happy with this router.

Good price, good wifi experience.
The router was troubling at first. The speed test showed extremely fast speeds but webpages took longer to load than with my old 2008 Apple Express. After changing the DNS addresses to OpenDNS, it took off like a scalded dog. Having two USB ports lets me hook up a printer and a network drive for backups and all the computers have access to the Photo library. Very nice.

state of the art router ahead of its time
To address the need of families or SOHO, where each user has a smartphone, a laptop, sometimes a tablet and a desktop, plus smart home and smart speakers, i.e. a very crowded and wi-fi thirsty environment, Linksys has a winner router: the EA8500. The setup is simple and straightforward, with a user-friendly GUI (unlike the too-technical D-Link GUI and the overly simple Netgear GUI, in par with the logical TP-Link GUI) The speed, power and coverage are in my humble experience (without benchmark tests) better than average for its price point. Best of all, it will not become obsolete in a few years thanks to the MU-MIMO technology that is not very common but is slowly becoming adopted by manufacturers. great buy!

Twice the speed
Our previous wifi router gave us internet speeds of only slightly more than 50 mbps as measured with an app used for that purpose. After checking reviews in Consumer Reports, I purchased this unit. Measurements since installation show our speed has increased to 100-110 mbps.
