Great Cable Co. box replacement when paired with a 4+ Tivo DVR

These minis with rf / ir remote are currently the 2nd gen. mini and the rf remote is a nice feature if you want to hide your equipment. These will need either an Ethernet connection or MoCA enabled on your Tivo DVR, either the 4 tuner Premiere, or any of the Roamio series. The minis use one of the tuners from the main Tivo DVR so you can operate multiple minis simultaneously, but not more than you have available tuners. Recording a show takes a tuner from the pool. Tivo has pretty decent phone support. The investment in Tivo equipment is substantial but the payback is in the 2 yr range compared to cable company equipment and the features are usually vastly superior.

    TivoMini

Mine died within a month had to get replacement. TiVo's don't play nice with cable providers as TiVo is their competitor and there are tons of issues. Always randomly dropping connections, requires a tuning adapter and is very slow switching channels. Tivo and cable providers always point fingers at each other in the end consumer stuck with a buggy poorly working product.

  • Excellent Addition For Existing TiVo Users

This little box is a great addition for my TiVo setup and helping me stay away from overpriced cable rental fees for their boxes. I have two (2) of these connecting to my Premiere 4. When they are not in standby ( I put them in standby to not use my tuners when they are not being watched), they use one of the tuners (each) from the Premiere 4, and I can watch any channel I can get on the main TiVo DVR. You can watch your recorded shows from the main TiVo DVR on the Mini. I have one Mini connected via an Ethernet cable and the otherMini connected via MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) and both function great although there seems to be just a very slight delay with the controls (I am talking milliseconds) using MoCA vs. Ethernet. The way TiVo has everything setup, these have Lifetime Service (no monthly fee). The RF capable remote is fantastic!!!!!!!! You do not have to point the remote at the TiVo to operate it. The best thing about the RF remote, is that I can put both of my Minis right next to each other for football and have multiple games on multiple TVs and since the RF mode PAIRS with the Mini it will NOT operate both Minis at the same time. If in IR mode, the remote will operate both TiVo Minis if they are in the path of the IR beam. The older version of the Mini TCDA92000 does not have RF ability. If you have TiVo and more than one TV this is a must for the TiVo fan.

  • Setting up a used Tivo mini

I'm a big fan of Tivo OTA and cut our cable 2 years ago. We purchased this mini to add a 4th tv room to the main Tivo Roamio box. While the unit functions correctly (now), the process of "unsubscribing" it from its former box, plus paying $49 to Tivo to "activate" this box was additional time and expense I had not counted on. The process took me 3 days of follow up calls with Tivo, and in hindsight I might have simply purchased a brand new mini instead of one of the earliest models; for the aforementioned reasons I'm rating this 4 stars instead of 5 stars. Having said that, having a TIVO box and the associated mini boxes has been a wonderful alternative to cable, as we have been able to record OTA (over the air) programming in HD and we also can stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, Pandora, etc.

  • We love it!

We've had a TiVo for a few years now and we love it. We can set up to record whole seasons of a show with just a few clicks, pause or rewind live TV, and record a show while watching another. Our old TiVo had just two tuners, so we were limited to recording just two shows or recording one while watching another. The Premiere4 has four tuners, so now we can record up to four shows at one time! It's been great, especially with all the new fall shows coming on. It's easy to set up, easy to use, and far superior to anything else we've ever used.

  • Big money saver in the long run...

If you have TV's in many rooms of your house like I do (garage, kitchen, living room, 3 bedrooms, and one out by the pool), then you could be paying $10/month to rent a cable box from your cable TV supplier. Using these will initially cost you $120 or so but essentially after one year, you have your ROI (return on investment) and the following year you'll be saving $120/year on every cable box you're NOT renting. PLUS... you can schedule and watch what you've recorded on your master TIVO... basically like having a DVR in every room instead of just a dumb 'cable box'. They are a little work to setup, but not that bad, and well worth the investment in time if you ask me. Cheers!!

  • Great Little Product

I already have 6 TIVOs in my house. I was installing a TV our on my covered lanai in our Florida house. My choices was another full TIVO, or using the MINI. I chose the MINI, and I am very pleased. The MINI gets linked to on of our existing TIVOs (either a Romero, Bolt or XL, Priemier) Old Series 3 will not work. The MINI steals a tuner from the host TIVO and links itself to that TIVO. When you use the MYShows on the MINI, you would think you were in front of the TV with the host TIVO. You can also watch live TV on the MINI via the tuner the MINI stole from the host TIVO. In all, the MINI is a small fraction of the price of a full fledged TIVO. It is small enough so I could mount it on the wall behind the TV, and not worry about a hard drive, or the humid environment I have it in. No cable card is required which is a real plus. In all, it was the perfect solution to my lanai TV

  • TIVO IN MUTIPLE ROOMS AT NO ADDED COST

The good: Free TIVO full function in added rooms for no added monthly fee. With no monthly fee it can pay for itself in about ten months . Cost approx. $150 divided by $15= 10 month breakeven after savings of no monthly fee. Things you should know . This is a dumb network box that uses one of the tuners on your Bolt or whichever main TIVO you have. You can not have 4 recordings going at once if you have 3 minis and a 4 tuner Bolt or Romio. Also you need to run network cabling to rooms to hardwire connect back to main Bolt TIVO box. Running network cable across the house is not easy or cheap. Does not work wireless. If you already have network wiriing across the house or do not mind running the cabling it is s cost effective way to have TIVO throught the house with ONE monthly TIVO bill for the main BOLT or Romio TIVO. Takes a little time to setup but once setup it is there forever. The wireless remotes on the newest mini is an improvement over the older infrared remote. Remote is no longer just line of sight . Unlike the main TIVO unit that changing channels is pretty instant changing channels on the tivo mini there is a lag of seems like two or three seconds. Not bad but could be snappier. Have not tried the streaming functions so no real comment there . Only use for TV tuner and recording box.

  • Easy to get 2nd room entertainment

There really are not that many options our there to get multi-room connectivity. This one works on MoCA and so far so good. It was easy to setup with the Bolt and it gives access to pretty much everything in the 2nd room. You can set shows to record from it also. The screens look just like the main one. The remote has the same layout too so you don't have to learn two.

  • I love my TiVo

This great little unit lets me start watching a movie in one room, then go to another room where I also have a mini and finish watching shows. Prior to minis copy protection was a big problem because I could not record a show on one Tivo and watch it anywhere in the house. Now with my minis, any show I record on my Roamio can be seen anywhere in the house.
