    Nikon "Kit" Lens

Yes this is a kit type lens. Nikon doesn't ,make bad lenses, some just less expensive than others. This a "f:4" lens, that means it needs some light to work right. And being a "55-200", it's similar to a 35mm 90-300. So, understand that this is not the lens for dimly lit indoor shots. This is a great single lens option to be outside in the daylight. That low 55 will give you a picture that looks the same as what you saw- the 200 part is almost a 4x magnification. You usually won't need or want to carry a bag of extra lenses, just this one. The "VR" means Vibration Reduction"; it gets rid of some of the shakes and blurs. I bought this for a kid whose camera came with the 18-55 VR. It was a very economical addition to what he had, fills in the upper range blank, and it is his "outside" lens. He's very happy with it. I bought this used from an eBay seller. It came in surprisingly beautiful shape. YMMV, of course, but this looked and felt barely used at all. I tested it on my d7100, and it was flawless. I may get me one ... Yea you could spend another $1000 and get something that does something else, but IMNSHO this lens will do most people right, as long as you're outside in daylight. Quick to focus, quick to zoom, and it's a "real" Nikon lens, so it works right on your camera.

My Initial Inspection of Refurbished Nikon 55-200 DX VR II Lens

On my initial Inspection of my purchase of the refurbished Nikon 55-200 DX VR II Lens it was packaged well, very clean looking, all glass looked clean and in good condition. Now I was to compare the initial operation of the Barrel movement compared to my Nikon 18-55 DX VR II lens, it was different; 1. the barrel release Button seemed to not have necessary spring back action when depressed to unlock the Lens barrel, although it did work, but did not feel right. 2. The Barrel movement seemed to have a drag to it, it did not feel like a smooth movement when zooming lens out and in. Now since I have never had this lens before, or handled one of this model Lens, I am not sure if I should be overly concerned with the above mentioned issues. I was a bit surprised due to this lens was sold to me as a Refurbished Lens, so I feel it should operate as well as my Nikon 18-55 kit lens. I would like a response to my concerns.

  • Amazing deal!

Despite being a refurbished product, it appeared brand new. For an amateur photographer, this lens is just what I needed as the next step up from the 18-55 mm kit lens that came with my camera. Focus speed is adequate and the photos are clear and sharp. See photos I took at the Columbus Zoo. For the price of approximately $100, this lens is highly recommended!

  • Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II Lens - Factory Refurbished

This lens has been a great addition to my camera arsenal. From the very first picture I captured to the present. I look forward to my next addition.

  • Great lens for outdoor shots

The lens is super sharp and the autofocus responsive. The comments about needing lots of light are valid, but normally you would also want to have in your bag something like the 35 mm f1.8 for indoor shots without flash. Those two lenses can tackle most situations (unless you are into wildlife).

  • Very good value

This is a fantastic lens for the price. Yes, it's cheaply made but the quality of the glass is amazing. Pictures are sharp, the lens is very lightweight and small, VR works reasonably well, AF is fast and accurate. If you're looking for a cheap, lightweight, small and sharp telephoto lens and you don't care too much about the quality of the coating, this one is the way to go. Pros: 1. Sharpness 2. Weight 3. Small footprint 4. VR II and fast AF 5. Price, very good value Cons: 1. Cheap, very "plasticky" feel 2. Plastic mount 3. Manual focus ring could be better and easier to control

  • Nikkor ZOOM Lens

lens came as part of D3300 "automatic" camera system and, just 5-days after purchase, camera with that lens fell into clear-fresh water for less than one minute and both camera and lens were destroyed (Nikon wanted more to repair than new replacement cost) so, since 18-55mm lens part of package was not damaged, I purchased the above as well as a new Body and have been using the combo since. Overall great entry-level dSLR but, as asked above -- not very durable !!

  • Great value for a very multipurpose lense.

I purchased this lense for my D3400 for a trip to Europe. 55-200mm is great for multiple situation and types of photography, including but not limited to portraits, street, and landscape. This should be the first lense you pick up after getting your D3400. AF is very accurate (90+%) and the shake reduction is excellent.

  • The Perfect Lens!

This lens ended up being to great to pass up. It is inexpensive, and takes very crisp photos, and very nice for a kit lens. Great Bokeh when taking portraits. very smooth focusing and zooming. It's Great for Beginners and amateurs alike! Its cost and durability make it a great lens to take it on trips, You wont need to worry about losing or breaking something since it's not very expensive.
