    Great lens, but...

Image quality is great, build quality is almost great (except that the auto/manual focus switch ring tends to fail on these lenses), and the value is the best thing (most bang for the buck). One unexpected weakness i notice was that when you have the sun directly in your frame, the image comes out very, and I mean very hazy compared to other lenses I have. I'm not sure if it has to do with some kind of lens coating they didn't have back when these lenses were built, but I wasn't expecting that. The haze can look good for some creative shots, but it's hard to control it when you don't want it. The haze is not a problem if you don't include the sun in the frame though (which I love to do).

    A GOOD LENS , BUT......

You would better be a Weight Lifter to handle this lens frequently ----- it is HEAVY ! and that ergonomic feature spoils it ! And coupled with a D700 NIKON BODY is a complete negative ! Far too unwieldy to handle . The quality is there , but living with it is another matter. I've sold mine !

  • Misses 5 stars because...

I love everything about this lens except the M/A focus selector ring, which really is the Achilles heel of this lens. If yours is not already broken, be very careful with it. On the bright side, mine still works despite being broken; it just doesn't stay locked in A. Not a big deal because it takes a good bit of turning to go into M focus. Overall though, this lens is a great value, especially because they sell brand new for around $1200 and you can get a very nice used one for half that.

  • Great value, shows it's age a bit

Image is sharp, colors look great. Great lens and really a smart buy in 2018 (as long as your camera has an internal focusing motor). The only area where it really shows its age is in focusing. Fast, but not modern pro lens fast. Also, you can definitely hear the motor work when its is focusing. Its noisey enough that people around you will here it, but its not as loud as the shutter noise on my d750. Not as quiet as a 2018 lens from Nikon, but that is really overshadowed by its awesome value and great performance.

  • Great legendary optic!

This lens has a long and storied history with a legion of photographers singing it's praises. Add me to that list. This lens is much improved over the previous push-pull design which I previously owned. People claim it isn't for sports. I disagree. While it isn't the fastest focusing lens, it is fast and accurate. But this lens isn't perfect. While great at 2.8, it does show some color fringing in high contest areas. Also, it performs better at around 180mm than 200mm. But like almost all lenses, the extremes are never the strongest showing. But the extremes are totally usable. The amazing performance of the lens shows the slight compromises of it's extreme settings. Out of focus areas are pleasing. Handling is good but not as great as Nikon MF lenses. The build quality is second to none. It really is a great lens.

  • Cost effective & beautiful image

I'm using this lens on a Nikon D3 for photographing basketball. I have tried it at several practices, and am surprised at how useful it can be. I can stand far back and get the picture. I love using it for catching expressions on people's faces. It is quick to autofocus, sharp, and with beautiful color balance. The lens is well made, and the price is decent. The lens is all metal and heavy; except for the AF switch. There is one thing that I do not like about the lens; ie.- the manual-AF switch is plastic. Be careful of this switch, that you don't accidentally put the autofocus into manual mode.

  • Amazing lent!

This lent is amazing! In night shots, landscape and even for portraits, I just received and I am very happy with the purchase, the auto focus is fast and strong, you have to shot like a 6 feet distance to accuracy in the auto focus, the buque is beautiful and very creamy, overall if you need a telephoto this is the best if you do not want spend more than thousand dollars (my opinion).

  • Great lens for a bargain price.

The two ring 80-200 f2.8 is a steal. They are razor sharp and focus almost as fast as the newer lens with the silent wave motor, but can be bought for a fraction of the price. Having said that, they are not for everyone. You must have a camera with a focus motor in the body (they will not focus with the lower end cameras like the d3000 and d5000 series cameras). And they are made of metal rather than plastic like the newer lens so they are quite heavy. But if those two do not bother you, go for it, they are a bargin!

  • "Great image quality for a very good price"

I just had it for approx two weeks but so far, with everything I shot, I got great results, ranging from portrait to a soccer game (with daylight). I am an amateur photographer and its my first zoom lens in this focal length with fixed aperture and I am amazed! A world apart from other zoom lenses I used before. I am really happy with my purchase! Great deal!

  • May be the only lens I need for basketball

I primarily shoot my son's basketball games (high school and AAU). Lighting conditions in a lot of gyms can leave something to be desired so having fast glass is essential. The Nikon AF 80-200M f/2.8 is a great addition to my bag. I can get close in on the action, the autofocus works well and I'm able to get a high percentage of quality shots. Biggest drawback to the lens is the weight - it's heavy but it's also built like a tank. Combining the lens with my D500 allows me to get better pictures than I had previously with great detail when I zoom all the way in. For during the game shots I don't think I'll need to pack another lens, the only time I'll need something else is to take a team picture after tournaments (when I need something wider). I would go five stars if ther was a way to make a lens this long, fast and durable somehow lighter. My son's team practiced last night, I decided to practice with the new lens. This weekend they're playing a tournament, I expect a lot of great shots.
