A fast action camera with durable construction and many features
The D500 is an excellent little camera that can adapt to many different situations due to its many assignable controls, fast and accurate autofocus, tilting touch screen, good control placement, fast framerate, sturdy build quality and weather sealing. I upgraded from a d7200 so increase in autofocus points 153-point 99 cross-type (d500) vs 51-point 15 cross-type (d7200) make a large difference in focus speed and accuracy. The autofocus processor is newer and faster and the exposure meter has 180000 pixels vs 2016 pixels on the d7200 which increases the chances of correct exposures. This camera is easy to hold and operate with good control placement, and illuminated buttons and top lcd. Group autofocus is an excellent feature for tracking moving subjects and works much better than previous AF modes for flying birds. The image quality is quite good for a 20 MP crop factor camera with very good detail in even moderate light, but it is not the same as a full frame 45mp body which will render smoother images and have better iso noise profiles. The tilting screen is an excellent feature for low angle shooting of wildlife or macro photography and touch to focus makes it even easier.Verified purchase: Yes

Not what I expected...
I do bird and wildlife photography, mostly birds---ISO capability is important. I've used Nikon D50, D200, D300s, and then waited for the Nikon D400, which never came. I got the Nikon D7100 instead, begrudgingly settling for the non "pro" control settings. I was pleasantly surprised, and then fell in love with the images I got with that camera. ISO capability was a big jump up, sharp contrasty shots and great AF. But a hard break stop in the car cracked the LCD screen, and I found my opportunity to get the D500. I've used it for 2 weeks: quiet, fast as heck, good af, all my old Nikon settings plus some, and good ISO. But I'm not getting the sharp images I was with the D7100, or even my D300s. Could well be something I'm missing, but given my experience at semi pro level photography, I don't think so. Also battery life is not as good as either any of my old bodies. I just ordered another D7100, which are super cheap... I could see this being a great sports camera.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

D500 Awesome Crop Camera.
This is the first camera in the so called professional grade. Was surprised it did not have at least 1 point and shoot mode. Other than that, it is an awesome Camera. I have taken nearly 3,000 pic already. I use it with Telephoto lens to get wildlife and landscape. I love the fact when it locks on to a target, I can get a total sequence of wing flapping. It took about 1,000 shot to figure out that I was better off in Manual mode and configure some of the button to quickly change focus mode to the environment I find myself in. I did not and do not have the issue of short battery life. One day I too over 600 pics and the battery was still going strong. I love the fact that my 400mm is equivalent to a 600mm lens.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Best Camera I Will Ever Afford.
This camera is probably the best camera I'll ever own. There is a small learning curve, as with any new camera. Monochrome photos are actually monochrome NEF files with all the color data in them. (should you change your mind.) I still need to learn how to retain noise reduction in editing. Photos are monochrome on the display. (unless of course, you're shooting color). Noise reduction in camera is terrific. With only a little softening. The articulating screen is everything it should be. I'm just beginning to explore the wide range of settings on this camera. fast focus, great picture clarity, feel like a high end FX body except the weight
This DX body focus speed at least as fast as my D3s (if not better), low light focusing is surprisingly fast. Image quality is excellent, feel like a FX D3s in terms of picture clarity. Built quality is excellent, a lot of metal but not heavy!! LCD screen is very clear and beautiful, coming from a D300, it is day and night difference. Because of the light weight factor, I started collecting DX lens (though I already owns many FX lens), such a great "little" (comparing to D3s) body that I can really tour with it, beach walk is now doable with camera. I will strongly recommend this as the best backup body if you feel FX is too heavy. Also a great camera if you want to start fresh, the gap between FX and DX is narrowing down with this nice camera.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Worthwhile Approach to More Advanced Photo Challenges
The rating compared to the yes and no answers may seem at odds. But it is important to remember the context which dichotomies seldom ever capture. The D500 is a relatively advanced camera with many features and there is a learning curve for most new users even if one has familiarity with Nikon. Even as an older model it is fairly expensive. Probably overkill for most users who could easily meet their needs at much lower price points and older/used cameras. I bought this camera because I was looking for a step up in capabilities while retaining full compatibility with the lenses I now have. Thus far, have not been disappointed. The picture quality is outstanding across the sampling I have been able to do to date. Although I am still learning some of the nuance of the camera and differences from other Nikon models I own, the D500 looks to be everything I expected and more. Great camera for motion shots!
Nice camera. DX format. The 10 FPS are amazing. Very easy to catch moving objects. The D500 is lighter than my D810, so more comfortable to carry around. Fits the hands well. Not great battery life, so keep an extra battery charged. I love the tilt screen. I use it when on a tripod, using back button focusing going for critical sharpness. Also when the camera is set low, the tilt screen makes that easy to see. Massive amount of focus points. So when in AF mode, it is easy to catch even smaller birds in flight. The D500 also has a lot of different settings for taking movies. You can select multiple grades of recording, higher or lower resolution, frames per second, quality type functions. D500 is the Best Wildlife Camera Available
I love this camera. This is my second body, purchased as a backup. I own several Nikon Z cameras as well, but the AF tracking is superior on the D500. Very Happy with this Nikon D500 Camera Kit!!
- The kit as assembled by Cameta has everything needed to start taking photos immediately. The heavily padded knapsack easily houses everything and feels like it should last a good long time. It's adjustable and fairly comfortable to wear. - The Nikon D500 and Nikon 18-300mm lens are a good general winning combo. I've been on a photo-taking frenzy with this setup. The camera and supplied lens are not feather weights, but I have no problem carrying this combo around for 5-6 hours and I'm not the strongest person. - The auto-focus is superb especially for non-stationary wildlife and the usable photos (sometimes called a keeper rate) is way up in the mid-90th percentile even when doing some 10 frame per second spray blasts. At that speed the mirror does tend to be a factor in the view-finder as it's flipping up and down, but with a little practice it's not a really big deal at all to track your subjects. - The camera itself feels very solid and well built and I like the placement of the exterior buttons and topside controls. The camera's viewfinder is very clear and bright and I don't need my glasses to use it as I do with my D5300. - Image quality is excellent in both jpg and raw, and has exceeded some of the other reviews I've read. Although it will accept an SD card, this camera begs to have the other slot filled with a high-speed xqd card. In doing so, the 10 frames per second is attainable for a longer period and the buffer doesn't fill quick as is does with just an SD card. - The touch screen is clear, really nice, tilts up-and-down, but it does not twirl around so you can use it to take a selfie (like you can with the fully articulating lcd screen on the Nikon D5300). - There is no built-in flash which is not a problem since the kit comes with an external flash. - Out of the box, battery life was a little disappointing but with every discharge and charge cycle it's getting much better even with using the touch-screen quite a bit (the on-screen pic review & histogram is useful along with the ability to finger swipe through pics and pinch to zoom in-or-out). When viewing the menus on the touch screen, one must use the paddle button on the back to navigate them - no touch-screen access for those. When taking a pic using the viewfinder, the touch-screen turns off so you can't mess anything up if you're squashing your nose against it. - The 18-300mm supplied lens is sharp but not exceptional in very low light - if you have a lens that is (such as the 35mm 1.8), this camera will delight you with its low light functionality. The lighted buttons on the backside are from heaven as I do a fair amount of evening/night shots. - The camera to pc usb cable is sturdy as-is the socket just inside the camera's side access door. - I've been through the camera's menus and they are easy to navigate (especially upgrading from a D5300). These menus allow for lots of customization which I'm finding very useful (button reassignments, custom banks, etc.) - Nikon appears to have put alot of thought into this D500, however, the only suggestion I would make to send this to a stellar review, is that the two storage slots each be the same - Ex: 2 SD cards, or 2 XDQ cards, not one of each. - All-in-all it's a lot of features for the cost. At just over one month of usage, averaging 100-200 photos a day, I have no problem recommending this camera as a great all around performer especially where accurate auto-focus and a higher frame rate are needed. Best dang DX YET
IT does wat a D3 does when the D3 first came out. Except there is about a $3500 savings. Other than 95% view. Which is splitting hairs in my book. Plus it has the 1.3 additional crop factor which yields a 2. O crop. But. NO full frame. Which I don't use all that often anyway. Unless I am in a situation where I simply need the extra megapixels or extra wide that full frame yields one. The orginal zoom Feet. I shoot weddings. Rodeo arena. Sports some commercial.. Vehicles for car dealers and just about anything else as long as it legal. 46 years behind a camera all with Nikon. Well Nikon and Mamiya roll film when it was popular. 35mm was all Nikon. Now all digital is Nikon. So yes 46 years with Nikon.22 years in The U S Air Force and guess what I did there. Photographer Old is not for another 15-20 years. Keep Shooting.
