The 2nd generation Amazon Echo Dot smart assistant is the scaled-down version of their larger Echo system. This second generation model launched in 2016 to build upon the success of the original Echo Dot and came with a couple of new features as well as a white color option. When used as a smart speaker, the Echo Dot can link to a smart device using Bluetooth. If you want a bigger sound than this miniature device can offer, you can also link it to external speakers using the same Bluetooth connection or a 3.5 millimeter audio jack. The Echo Dot is a lot more than just a wireless speaker, though. It is also a hub for Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant. When the Echo Dot’s microphone array picks up Alexa’s wake word, she comes online to give you the news or weather updates, turn on a music streaming service, or even tell you a joke. The Echo Dot can also be linked to apps and used as a hub for a wide range of other smart home devices. If the Echo Dot is connected to the right devices, Alexa can adjust your thermostat, turn your lights on and off, and control your home security system.Product Identifiers

Even if you don't have home automation - this is a great tool and toy!
I strictly wanted this device for home automation. In Canada Amazon isn't selling it yet - but I knew I could use many of the features anyways. Once I received my "new" "unopened" Amazon Echo (which was opened, used and configured for somewhere in the states) It was easy to reset and get down to business. Alexa takes all of my systems (which are interconnected with a popular home automation hub) and makes them available by voice command. The reliability of the 7 microphones is astonishing (compared to other voice systems I have used over the years). Alexa makes mistakes - but you can just say her name in the middle of a command and she will halt what she is doing to listen to your new command. The only time I have had issues is during a party when over a dozen other people were talking at the same time. Alexa (can now be renamed to Echo, Computer or Alexa). This becomes very natural in short order. She has become part of the family and provides no end of entertainment for my 2yr old and 6yr old. She answers many trivia questions, calculator functions, weather, sports, news, music and much more. I hope this type of product stays popular for years to come - as I don't know how I could live without her at this point. For security reasons Alexa will NOT interface with your door locks. I wish the option to lock (but not unlock) could be added. This would be my only complaint so far. Combined with my Harmony Smart hub, Smartthings Hub and many z-wave lights and switches, having a voice remote just makes sense. Even the Ecobee3 pays attention to Alexa. Alexa is also a bluetooth gateway. I have a second Echo in the bedroom - hooked up to a Bose speaker system. Not only can she play through the speakers using Echo bluetooth - but you can easily have her play a gentle thunderstorm or Ocean waves in the background. You can even ask Alexa to sing you a song - and appreciates good manners. With the right skill sets - the kids enjoy that she can fart and belch too! I could go on - but you should just get one and enjoy the fun. PS... I have a VERY stable and VERY quick internet connection. Alexa requires this to work smoothly. She will work with slower and less stable networks, but it won't be quite as much fun (if your demanding of your electronics like I am).Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Great smart assistant in a well-priced compact device.
Alexa is a great assistant. The second gen Echo Dot isn't as fast as the third gen model, but it works fine. Also, the sound from the speakers isn't as loud and full as the third gen. Overall, having Alexa in something this small and always on to listen for your questions is great. The price is right and the functionality is really nice. Amazing what it can do!
I love these gadgets! This was the 2nd Echo Dot that I purchased, and I am even considering getting another. I am amazed at how it can understand my voice, even from across the room. I can command it to tell me all kinds of facts, encyclopedia articles, music, books, stories, audio streams, interactive games, and so much more. The audio quality is good, even for such a small device, and it can be connected via Bluetooth to other audio output devices. Setup is easy with a tablet that has WiFi Internet and Bluetooth. You don't need an Amazon Prime account to use it, but it sure helps, especially when you request certain content through Amazon. And the Amazon Alexa app for voice command recognition is getting smarter every day. Awesome features, small size, unlimited uses!
Received the unit in 2 days. When it arrived, I spent about 15 minutes setting it up and getting acquainted with features. Has been working flawlessly since. It is a joy to be able to ask any question that comes up and get an authoritative answer or just request a song or audio book with a simple "Alexa, play rolling stones" or "Alexa, read my audiobook". Whether you just want the weather, latest sports scores or help with a math problem, Alexa will help. We now have 3 in the house and will be adding two more. With a simple $3 subscription to Amazon's music service, you can stream almost any music you can think of by simply asking Alexa for it! For the paranoid - this device is NOT for you. The echo dot is always listening and while the design is supposed to only listen when you say the name of the device (Alexa, Amazon or Echo - your choice), there are enough times that I hear one in another room say "sorry, I did not understand the question" to tell me it misunderstands these prompts to have been said when they weren't pretty often. :-)Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
