Amazing value IF on sale - otherwise, buy the 27GL850-B
TLDR: Buy this version when it's on sale. If the price is within $100 of the GL850-B, buy the GL850-B instead for the better color gamut, better I/O, and way better adjustable stand.
The good:
+has the same color gamut as the LG 27GL83A-B
+IPS monitor = beautiful colors and images from any angle
+144hz refresh rate for a 1440p (2K) IPS monitor
+great response time even when not using the fastest 1ms setting
+great value when on sale
The bad:
-stand can only be adjusted for tilt and nothing else
-I/O options are very limited
-1ms response time is a marketing gimmick (will create overshooting coronas)
-HDR doesn't look good (it's only worth using HDR on HDR10+ monitors)
-bad value when not on sale and within the price range of the 27GL83A-B and the 27GL850-B
Commentary:
I was originally debating between the LG 27GN850-B, the LG 27GL850-B, and the LG 27GL83A-B.
The GN850-B doesn't appear to be available in Canada, the GL850-B is pricey, and the GL83A-B was sold out. I noticed that a few sites had stocked a new model, which was the GN800-B, and I decided to go with it because it's almost the same as the LG 27GL83A-B in terms of specs but with a cheaper stand. Also, it was on sale for a considerable discount. I ended up saving over $200 by buying the GN800-B over the GL850-B.
I might've gotten lucky, as I've read on Reddit that the QC isn't as good for anything lower tier than the GL850-B model, but either way the monitor didn't have any dead pixels. Note that you will need to carefully adjust the settings to get a look that you like. If you haven't used an IPS gaming monitor before, you should expect a bright glow with vivid colors. However, you should also expect a poor contrast ratio and lackluster blacks / dark areas in games.
The stand can only be adjusted for tilt. I recommend you consider a VESA mount setup if you're going with this model. I'm using the stand for now but I had to place it on top of a box in order to raise the height and keep it level with the maximum height on my other 27" monitor.
The monitor is gorgeous. Display is crisp and colours pop. High refresh rate works very well. The value is very awesome regarding the price. This monitor ticks all the box.
Overall happy with my purchase did have wear and tear on the bezel but the screen itself was solid. Did have some hand prints or fingerprints on the screen, but was a small issue since I just cleaned the screen then all was good. Very solid for the price and happy with the purchase!
