Absolutely an under-rated masterpiece ............
While not as funky, or filled with dense Americana and Civil War era imagery as The Band's first two masterpieces,"Music From Big Pink" & "The Band," and despite Levon Helm's opinion that most of "Cahoots" is sub-par (which he feels similarly in regards to "Stage Fright") .... this record is majestic, and an album that 99% of musicians/bands/groups would be hard-put to match, and would consider their crowning achievement. IMO, it qualifies as a "Desert Island Record." In addition to the spectacular "Life is a Carnival" there are wondrous songs & performances such as "When I Paint My Masterpiece" (written by Dylan), "4% Pantomime" with Van Morrison, "Smoke Signal," "Volcano" and the wondrous "River Hymn." Run, don't walk, to get your copy!
