Product Information
A playfully nostalgic title for the Nintendo 64, or N64 (as well as for the Sony PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, and Microsoft Windows or PC), Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes brings to life the games we used to play with generic green and tan toy soldiers as kids. Developed and published by The 3DO Company for a 1999 release date, the game also tapped into the appeal of seeing these little plastic army men brought to life in animated 1996 movie, Toy Story. Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes follows Army Men 3D (though not as a direct sequel) as part of the Army Men series of video games, which also includes Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes 2, Army Men: World War, Army Men: Air Attack, and Army Men: Toys in Space. The series has seen releases across a range of platforms, from the early generations of consoles and handhelds like the Game Boy Color and Dreamcast to the PlayStation 2 (PS2), Game Boy Advance (GBA), Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS. In Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes for the Nintendo 64 (N64), gameplay diverges from the top down strategy mechanics of earlier games to a more immersive third person action perspective. Each level begins with a mission briefing and objectives before the player, as Sarge, sets out to rescue his captured Green Army Bravo company comrades from General Plastro and his evil Tan Army. The game has a whimsical sense of humor as the little men interact with human environments, such as a bathroom or garden, to pick up new “Weapons of Mass Destruction,” such as the magnifying glass. Other weapons include bazookas, grenades, mines, the standard base rifle, machine gun, shotgun and sniper rifle. In Sniper mode, Sarge benefits from the element of surprise, zooming in to pick off Tan Army men from a distance. In-keeping with the third person shooter gameplay, Sarge has a health bar, which drains with each hit from an enemy. Health boxes are scattered throughout the world to replenish the bar, allowing Sarge to engage in some cavalier heroics and risk heavy fire to advance and take out maximum enemies between each health replenishment. There is also a radar system to help with navigation and help Sarge search for otherwise well camouflaged Tan Army enemies. A range of movements, based on the postures of real plastic army men, help bring Sarge to life on the battlefield. Beyond walking, these include crawling along in the prone position and kneeling to shoot the enemy. Environments also add to the nostalgic sense of the games kids play with plastic army men, with toys, furniture and other features providing a sense of scale. In addition to the single player campaign, Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes includes a multiplayer mode that recalls the simple deathmatch fun of the Nintendo 64 (N64) classic GoldenEye 007. Another similarity to that popular game is the evocative soundtrack of Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, which features nods to old war movies and complements the in-game sound effects of machine guns and rumbling tank maneuvers. A fond homage to those plastic army men that video games went a long way to replacing in children’s lives, Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes for the Nintendo 64 (N64) is an easy pick for enjoyable and nostalgic military action.Product Identifiers
