    Best starter full-frame mirrorless

Canon has been getting it right for decades. But for the past 10 years or so, Canon's enthusiast SLRs have taken a bashing from professional reviewers. This mirrorless model followed in their footsteps among reviewers, but like all Canon's other cameras, it has proven itself with actual owners and users. It's a bestseller for good reason. In hand, it feels great. Controls are well placed and easily accessed on the fly. Size and weight are perfect for travel, and the articulated LCD screen is indispensable. Touch screen is sensitive and fully implemented. Oh, did I mention image quality? Color science is just the best, and contrast is well modulated. With a good lens this camera punches out excellent images. At its lowest ISOs the dynamic range is a little behind the competition, but by 1600 it's right up there with the big guns. Low light shooting is delightful, and noise isn't a real issue til you exceed ISO 6400. Video is a little compromised compared to the competition, for my needs it's perfectly fine. Really, the only thing I wish Canon had done better is frame rate. For tracking subjects in continuous autofocus mode, burst shooting really isn't burst at all. It's pretty slow. Still, I'm able to get great shots of my dogs at play, and almost every image is in tack-sharp focus, whereas with many other cameras, burst rates are fabulous, but there aren't as many keepers. I think it averages out pretty well. Canon's dual autofocus is class-leading. Menus are sensible, easy to understand, and well organized. Ergonomically, it's a pleasure to operate. All these combined make the EOS RP just plain fun to use. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Great but suffered from shutter failure

I've been using Canon products for years sans any failures for mainly personal use but have also used them for paid work. This is the first Canon fullframe mirrorless that I've owned and it quickly had shutter failure after a few days of minimal use. Had to return it, and I just can't recommend it and I just can't bring myself to buy another one because I'd be worried it would be unreliable. In every other way it is great in image quality and functionality for a "low cost" fullframe mirrorless. However, given that this and the R are Canon's first generation of fullframe mirrorless, you might want to wait for Canon's second or third generation as things will hopefully be better (whereas Sony's third generation are great as I owned the a7iii for half a year).

  • Full-Frame but small.

It could have been built with a better body material and a bit bigger size to balance the weight of the lens. I like the fact that is full-frame and easy to use and travel with.

  • Excellent value for money

Probably the best priced full frame camera in the market now. This brings the the amazing potential of full frame cameras into the hands of the enthusiast and yet produces professional quality images. Very convenient features in the external buttons as well the touch screen!

  • Greatest Value Full Frame

I have been shooting with a Canon 5d mark II for years, and the RP blew my expectations out of the water. The image quality is sharp, the menus are easy to navigate, and don’t let the youtubers steer you away, with the new firmware update this camera is even more amazing. Yes, the sensor and MP match the 6dII, but this camera is compact, portable, and so unbelievably comfortable to use. The swivel screen is nice. If you used a sl1 or newer, the touch screen navigation is the same. Live view is amazing, and the focus stacking and in camera level are amazing tools. This is well worth the money if you have EF lenses. My canon 17-40, 70-200, and sigma 35 have no issues with speed or AF connection. I cannot speak on the video as I bought this for travel photography, but it has replaced my daily driver. The canon connect works great, and allows simple import into light room as well. Some photos to show it’s capabilities. It’s a great buy, definitely professional quality.

  • Great Value!

I was looking for a “B” camera for a video podcast. I wanted to stay in the canon family and get a full frame. The EOS RP originally did not have 1080p at 24fps but with the recent update they added it! Immediately picked up this camera and used it to film two episodes of our podcast. The AF is awesome and the video quality is great! For $950 this is an awesome full frame option!

  • Great if you don’t want to get the Eos R

Yes, many differences are present, but the fact of the matter is that the image quality is identical and cannot get be compared, in my opinion. It’s all about the photographer

  • Excellent value. Works fine for wedding and events photography.

Excellent image quality. Focus is fast and accurate. Using it with my Canon 6d for wedding and event photography with no issues. Focus much faster and accurate then the 6d. Would not recommended for sports or anything requiring high frame rate.
