Comet SBB-5 Dual Band 2M/70cm Mobile Antenna PL-259
The Comet SBB-5 is a shortened version of the Comet SBB-7 with very little compromise in overall performance. It's length @ 38" makes it very attractive, and the "open coil" design allows it to flex when it hits bushes or tree branches (very desirable). It is rated at 120-watts power FM -- which far exceeds most mobile radios. There is SO MUCH to like about the SBB-5, and essentially NO drawbacks. The SBB-7 is a bit unwieldy at 55" and has a tendency to "run into things". It is SO TALL that occasionally it would hit the ceiling pre-stressed concrete in a parking deck (ding... ding... ding...) Here is the comparison you've been waiting for: SBB-5 SBB-7 ____________ ______________ 2M gain 3.0 dBi 4.5 dBi 70cm gain 5.5 dBi 7.2 dBi Length 38" 55" Max Power 120 W 70 W Open Coil that YES NO Flexes when hit by bushes or tree branches. Don't get me wrong, the SBB-7 is a wonderful antenna if you need the HIGHEST performance -- I used one for 6-years. However, for only a modest reduction in dBi gain (especially on 70 cm) the SBB-5 is "just the ticket" in most cases.
