Does all what I want ....
I had one of these machines for 8 years but then it finally decided it didn't do all what I needed. It would still play dvd's but it then would not accept all blank discs or always record. So as I used this machine just about every day the time had come to replace it. As I was used to this machine and was very pleased with it I thought hey I might as well just get another so therefor all I had to do was put the cables straight into the new one. Having a manual is a good idea to set it up but if you are good technically then you should be o.k. Great for recording from hard drive and t.v. onto a disc which is why I bought this machine as there are no new ones that I know of that have this feature.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Refurbished

Classic design

Super clear recordings and easy to use
I'd bought it to replace two Samsung boxes that were both constantly losing channel reception, this Sony has no such issues. Another positive is that, unlike the Samsungs, the DVD Drive works perfectly every time (and is really quiet) . As regards user friendliness It's pretty straight forward even without bothering to read the instruction manual. The recording quality is very good with great colour and perfect sound, the only negative being that the files are bigger than the ones on the Samsung of equal quality so it is easy to fill the hard-drive if you do not backup your recordings (rather than watch them from the Sony, I copy my TV recordings to my PC and then, when I've got time to watch them, I put them on a USB stick )Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Sony at its very best
I'm delighted with the Sony Multi-Region 890 HDD/DVD Recorder. The 500GB hard drive is superb - with an extensive range of recording modes - the Freeview programme timer-recordings work extremely accurately. The HDD editng works is excellent - accurate to one frame. The archival transfer to individual DVD discs is very easy and was one of the reasons I chose this machine. This is an excellent dvd recorder. I bought it off e Bay to replace an older Sony dvd recorder which was a great piece equipment but eventually ran out of steam.
