This is an excellent geared head; it locks solidly and the fit and finish are excellent; however, I have arthritis in my hands and I can't use the wheels to release the mechanism for fast movement. The springs are very strong, and the hard corners of the wheels make moving them painful for me. If the wheels were the same diameter, but less aggressive, or if the springs were weaker, I might have a chance. As it is, I must return it with SINCERE REGRET!

    It hurts!

I compared this tripod head with similar heads from other manufacturers. The Benro is well-built and sturdy. However, it is difficult to use because the spring tension is too high. It takes a lot of effort to turn the knobs and it becomes tiring quickly. The spiked knobs for large movements actually hurt my hands. I kept the K&F Concept head, instead of this one.

  • Solid, well made. Small caveat.

Exactly as described, arrived as expected, well packed, solid device. very nice. Did not expect the gear release knobs to be as stiffly spung to hold open. You have to hold the release knob to move it freely so you can't really use it like a fluid head. I did not realize that. I would still recommend it.

  • Great Product at a Great Price

The Benro GD3WH Geared tripod head is a very well made product. It is very lightweight which makes taking the tripod in the field less tiring. I am highly impressed with the quality of it build and the exactness of its fine tuning. The quick release knobs are quite handy and very intuitive to use. I highly recommend this product and I would not hesitate to buy another one.

  • Light Weight and Smooth

Didn't want to spend a fortune on a gear head. The Benro is relatively light weight but appears to be well constructed. Controls are well placed and operation is extremely smooth. Big point was the built-in ARCA clamp. Can use the 'L' bracket and don't have another mount plate to keep track of. Only time will tell on durability but extremely happy with the head so far. Gave it 5 stars since can't really find anything to complain about and was a good price.

  • Using the Benro geared tripod head.

The head is what I expected. I took it for a field trial and had generally good feelings. One draw back I found was the difficulty I experienced with the quick setting knobs. The tension was very high and uncomfortable for me. In time, I am sure, I will get used to it. It also took some time getting oriented in the field as to which know pertained to which direction. All of these problems are simply a matter of getting used to it. I did find the head very good in setting the camera in the field. It will be a great asset because it allows for very fine control of camera position. I would absolutely recommend it to any photographer.

  • Does the job its intended to do

This 3 way geared head is solid and substance and supports a medium format mirrorless camera with 100-200mm lens with a 1.4X extension with ease. The reason for not giving it five stars is the high spring tension on the clutch knobs and their design. The shape of the knob is very uncomfortable to move to the release position. The head / gears hold the camera in position without "creep". Used a Arca-Swiss D4 geared head at $1600.00 which did not work as well as this Benro Head. Acra-Swiss head is prettier but does not do the job,

  • Lighter alternative to the Manfrotto 410 geared head; seems well made

Geared heads are great for architectural photography (and landscape), but they’re heavy. Carrying a carbon fiber tripod with a geared head attached tends to unbalance the tripod when it’s being carried, and in any case, extra weight is seldom the best accessory for photography in the field. I sold my Manfrotto 410 geared head and bought the Benro GD3WH as a way to shed a bit more than a pound of weight at the top of my tripod. The Benro is made of metal and the whole thing feels well-built. But it still manages to be 460 grams (about 1 pound) lighter than the Manfrotto and works in much the same way. It’s also less expensive than the 410 and has a well-designed Arca-Swiss clamp rather than the proprietary clamp that comes on the Manfrotto 410. The clamp matched perfectly with both a Kirk L-bracket and with the Peak Design Arca-Swiss compatible plate. Like the Manfrotto, if you’re doing precise panoramas, you may want to mount your camera on a slider to center the horizontal rotation exactly over the vertical axis, because both heads are designed with the camera mount offset from the axis.

  • Good accessory.

Works very well, easy to use and very practical. I would like it to have a better dial to get more precision. Part Dimensions and location are part of an overall good design.

  • It just feels "right" in your hands

I have been looking for a [geared] tripod head to replace an old/heavy Manfrotto head. I wanted a head that could be carried on my photo trips to the Great Bear Rainforest. I wanted it to be durable, compact, and lightweight to deliver a SMOOTH turning for video filming. I cannot be happier. When you grab on the knobs they feel it just feel right. No practicing. No thinking about which knobs and how fast to pan. If you release the knob gears you can quickly move to a completely different photo field- and immediately start recording without have to edit the bumps recorded with my old head. I have recommended this tripod head to my son as well. I don't plan on buying any other head. Try it.
