This sensitive adaptation of John Steinbeck's coming-of-age story, "The Gift," stars Peter Miles as Tom Tiflin, a lonely young boy growing up on a farm in the Salinas Valley.
I Saw the Movie and That's Enough - I Won't Need to See It Again
I bought this for two reasons: 1. It's screenplay was written by John Steinbeck based on a couple of his short stories; and 2. The music is by Aaron Copland and I wanted to see and hear Copland's music integrated with a movie.
The story was engaging but not great. It is a boy-finding-his-early-manhood kind of movie in which a child strengthens his character through adversity. Not new and not outstanding. This is not all to the bad; the tale is told softly and doesn't always go the way one expects. The characters seem fairly natural and the drama is of the everyday kind we all go through. It is a story most of us can see ourselves in, to one extent or another.
The music was disappointing, however -- the least of Copland, part of his formative years I would guess. It is film music at its most trite, trivial, overwrought at times. Possibly it was the result of the concessions most unknown composers most make to the director and producer.
