A rare and hard to find item. It's a very precious DVD for me and my family.

The movie and the dvd tech are a huge failure to the spectacular story
horrible quality of the film itself ruined a spectacular story with amazing scenery and stellar cast.I have a top bluray player that does both blu ray and standard DVDs so it was not my tech. The item is non-returnable or I would return it. I read the book and enjoyed the audiobook first and was really looking forward to seeing the wonders of it all in film. UGH! Thanks to the poor tech quality of the film I am just glad I knew the story line and the solution to the mystery or the blurring, color-messing, and uncontrollable lighting would have left me in darkness, too. IN fact, I am a HUGE fan of Sir Sean Connery and bought the thing in honor of his passing. And so my feelings get into this as well. NO FAIR. Later, when I calmed down, I blushed to realize that the film itself still missed the mark - it was not only the poor tech quality of the dvd that failed to tell the story really well ! So sad - and the story deserved a a "topstuff" telling. There was the opportunity of efficiently describing the scenery and the people and the exciting labyrinthine puzzlebox monastery. Old days monastery movies stressed the purity and the ones later seemed focused on portraying the primitive lifestyle, the filthy ruled of hygiene in those days and sins of the unholy holy people. Both extremes are lies and both do harm and this is especialy evil when the truth is a wonder! So much good work and so many true healings and miracles and great deeds are slandered in both extreme portrayals. I calmed down and went back to the book and audiobook and other Sean Connery films. THE NAME OF THE ROSE (DVD) is a gripping medieval mystery with great features.
First, it is one of the very few books that have been outstandingly transformed from literature to film. Secondly, it also happens to be one of Sean Connery's best acting performances (won him a Hugo among other wins). This DVD, which is not so easy to find now (produced in the eighties) can now be considered a classic. Directed by the incomparable Jean-Jacque Annaud from a book by Umberto Eco. "Name of the Rose": a Detective Story from the Reformation
Several years ago I purchased (on eBay) a DVD of this movie produced in Brazil. At that time no American DVD was available due to some licensing issue. That copy was terrible visually. This American issue of the movie is great - as is the movie itself. I have loved the movie since I first saw it. It's a very engaging story with great acting and wonderful cinematography. A great Medieval Murder Mystery
If you like Medieval life, monks copying books, the Latin language, the Inquisition, monastery ritualls, and a great murder mystery with "young boys being hurled out windows," get this movie. I love it the first time I saw it. I watch it at least once a month. This was an early movie for Christian Slater. He had to do a short nude scene, and according to an article, he cried because he didn't want to do it, but his agent had forgotten to put "no nude scenes" in his contract, not thinking there would be such a scene in this movie. He got through it OK, and was asked years later what he did after the scene was shot. This is a classic Sean Connery flick. There's a serial killer doing deadly deeds in a 14th century abbey on a mountain top in Northern Italy. Connery's a friar brought in to solve the crimes and he's a brilliant Sherlock Holmes precursor. Seventeen year-old Christian Slater is his novice. Dark, clever, satisfying. Great ride into History and the Dark Ages
This is a classic "Who Done it?" Dark Ages style... Ron Perlman is amazing! Fiming is rather dark and drab (It IS the Dark Ages after all). It is really a gem.
