Once upon a time, in the Nexus...
Meant to be a "passing of the torch" from Original series to Next Generation it doesn't quite achieve that objective. However, as a "stand alone" movie.. where we get to experience the "Nexus" it does provide a basis for "Discovery", and the multiple realities of that series.
