Product Information

In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

    A Monumental Picture in Movie History

    None of the American made war movies ever made before 1985 can hold a candle in quality to this epic. The tension, claustrophobia and psychological drama of these sea wolves unfolds with stark realism in sharp focus. These are not the idealised characters of most navy going movies with all sailors well scrubbed, shaved, manicured, smelling good and looking like they just left home. On the contrary, the men in Das Boot's German U-boat wear the war on their faces, salt in their beards, oscillating between the adrenaline rush of the hunt for ships they torpedo, to sinking to the bottom of the ocean, with depth charges exploding all around them and the enemy on the surface waiting to kill them. Although nominated in six categories for Oscar's in 1981, it did not win any which is very strange given the breadth of its achievements. This picture is a must see for anyone who wishes to explore the reality of submarine warfare during World War II. Director, Wolfgang Petersen tells a story over 2 hours inside the belly of a submarine that will have you on the edge of your seat feeling like you are inside the U-boat with the sailors trapped..

    Amazed To See , Director's Cut for a timeless classic!

    I was amazed to see a director's cut had been prepared for this timeless film from Wolfgang Peterson. Over the years he has been known for good films, some international and some not. This film gets at the confinement suffered by a crew on a submarine, but also how things quickly turn about which frequently happens in war.

    The Best War Book of them All.

    I had watched two versions of the movie Das Boot and enjoyed them very much. BUT I was totally unprepared for the book. It is 500+ pages of captivating detail of submarine life and war drama. When I was done with the book, I offered it to my wife to read. She reads a great deal, but has no special interest in mechanical detail or war, but she was captivated by Das Boot. What better recommendation could I offer, for either the DVD or book ?

    This movie tells a very accurate and compelling story of how the German troops, particularly the U-boats and their crews, became increasingly discontented with their leadership, their unbearable living conditions on board, and how they faced ever increasing odds of not returning home toward the end of WW ll. Excellent movie. Very accurate. One of my favorite movies.

    Superb at every level!!!

    Remarkable casting, acting, and direction. A riveting story from the opening ping ping ping to the final devastation. Astonishing filming and special effects--completely believable--like a documentary. The story tugs at one's loyalties, especially when Germans destroyed the American convoy and the sailors were jumping into flaming waters. Use of scenes inside the U-boat, of the periscope crew outside, images of the turbulent ocean, and the land attack create "hold-your-breath" dynamics. Director brackets the story with portrayals of decadence at the beginning and pompous opulence in the penultimate banquet scene once they landed. Genius editing throughout. The message, that war is hell no matter the side, comes through loud and clear.

    Wolfgang Peterson's Magnum Opus. An excellent WWII combat movie depicting the U-Boat war from the submariners' perspective. The file has all the thrills, terror, and boredom of a combat cruise wrapped into 3+ hours. It can be slow but once the action starts, you won't be able to relax.

    German version

    This is an awesome movie anout the German U-boats. It tells about the other side of WWII. It shows what life was like on the U-boat, and i don't see how they did it. Even though it was the enemy, you still could feel some empathy for them and what they went through. THIS is the only version to watch, i've seen the one dubbed in English but it takes away the reality of it This was a great find

    Excellent. One of the best Navy war movies

    Best submarine war movie of all time. This version had English voice over which was very well done with a bit of a German accent. This was nice as it made the film easier to understand. One of my favorite war movies.
