About this product

Product Information

This HBO mini-series tells the story behind the legendary movie CITIZEN KANE, which had a working title of "RKO #281." It's the story of the battle between Orson Welles (director and star of CITIZEN KANE), and William Randolph Hearst (whose real life bore an incredibly strong resemblance to the movie's main character).

I was hopeful upon ordering this. A time and characters so loaded with potential. But I found the film really flat. For starters it's really miscast all around. The lead as Well's is totally unbelievable. The relationship between Hurst and actress Marion Davies is just glossed over. Melanie Griffith is the same characture as was the actress who played her in Citizen Kane. And Hurstbis so one dimensional it's laughable. Brenda Blethyn as Louella Parsons is probably the best and it's a tiny role. They should redo this as a mini series where they can really explore the characters and what happened and please use top rate actors. Not a bad movie but not good and not completely factual. I look forward to a remake.

  • Very good film.

This film is very entertaining, but it takes some admittedly necessary dramatic liberties on the actual events. If there were special features (including the American Experience documentary upon which this film was based) it would be a 5-star rating. Buy the special edition of Citizen Kane to watch before watching this film. It contains that documentary and some wonderful commentary.

  • It gives an air of "mystery", without being misleading!

It is action based--without special effects!
