    Jane Austen's Persuasion

Also though I have seen several versions of Jane Austen's novels put into film this version I had not seen before. The scenery, elegant country estates, the views of Bath along with the many costumes were wonderful. However I felt the directing or perhaps the actors were not sure how to portray these characters. I took much of the film to determine who was with whom and what the story line should be. I must read Austen's book to clear the confusion with the characters. Although most of the acting was great the two main characters were cold and the one young women was shuttled to and from different families for their benefit, not hers. When she meets her old suitor once again she seems cold to me and unresponsive. It was just strange. They had feelings for each other but just couldn't communicate. In the meantime everyone else was so lively and fun and talkative. As I said it just didn't fit. After watching Sense and Sensibility and two versions of Pride and Prejudice I did gave it a four because everything else was beautiful in this film.

    Not good at all!

If you're a true Jane Austen fan, then be SURE to avoid this movie! Ugh! No chemistry whatsoever between the two main characters, Anne looks like a deer in headlights most of the way through the movie. It skips and jumps around literally. In a scene where Anne is riding a carriage, the camera literally jumps up and down with the carriage, like it was being filmed with someone's cell phone! The sound is very bad - you have to turn up the audio on your viewing device quite high. The costumes look like something they dug out of an old trunk somewhere and just put them on the actors' backs. Truly awful, but completely great if you're looking for a good laugh. I personally think that these movies BASED on classics should have someone who actually understands the story write the screenplay, and they should hire actors that have actually read the book as well. Truly one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

  • This is what a woman's love can do for a man

Watch a romance film? Me? I never knew more about Jane Austen than her name, and I wondered what made her such a historical figure. Hearing the star (Amanda Root) in the film speak the words, as she says [All the writing about women was] "written by men", I knew I was in the presence of Jane Austen herself. It was a window to the past. She added rather deeply to my view of life, and my memories of the women I have cared about through the years. I was enthralled. Her words made me grateful to be alive, that I might earn the privilege of showing her, and in fact all women, loyal and deep love, by a man who is true. I would share my life with her if it were possible, and I am saddened that she was before my time. She lived when women were 'second class citizens' and their words would never be published. In her writing we wait for the moment that you sadly realized will never come, when the male lead should admit his love for her is greater than the distinction of his 'upper class'. Such desperation to remain accepted by shallow peers is what makes people pretend to be less than human, and guards their heart from touching another's soul. Yet, this is what human life is about. And then she finds the note.. - reviewed by Laserguard

  • An enjoyable overall

We bought two versions of this movie and enjoyed the 2008 version better because the actors felt more appropriate. The story is basically the same and you get that same feeling of disgust for the open conceit and selfishness of some and the compassion for the self-sacrifice of others. I also liked that the main character wrote her thoughts in a diary in the other movie as well because it really brought out her deep feelings of love and ability to see the situation through the eyes of others. An enjoyable movie on the whole.

  • Love Triumphs

This is a classic English production of a Jane Austin novel. On display is the wealth and vanity of British aristocracy, within a family indifferent to the talent and feelings of its youngest daughter. But, alas, in the end, love prevails. This movie production is very well acted. Flawless, actually.

  • Awesome movie

This is my mom’s favorite Jane Austen film adaptation of this story, and rightfully so. It’s about two characters, Wentworth and Anne, who fell madly in love with one another once, but due to the persuasion of Anne’s aunt (hence the title), Anne breaks off what implies was an engagement. Eight years later, Anne’s considered a spinster and the luxury she once enjoyed no longer exists. She gets a second chance when Wentworth visits a mutual friend, and lets her heart guide her instead of society’s silly conventions. You feel even more sorry for good-hearted Anne when you see how bullied she is by other characters, such as her sister and family friend Henrietta. Jane Austen was considered insightful for her time, and this insight, compounded with breathtaking views and brilliant acting, makes this film a treat for any Austen fan.

loved the series but unfortunately this copy cut a few scenes. i do not e think is would hurt the movie to add the scenes that were cut, only maybe another 15 minutes so why? if you love Jane austin it is lovely.
